When Seo Jeong-joo left this world, his problem of pro-Japanese activities was brought up in earnest. Those who criticize his pro-Japanese tendency argue that the pro-Japanese Oriental cultural theory had effect on the early poems of Seo Jeong-joo as they turned from Western trend to the traditional one, and his pursuit of eternity and exploration of the spirit of Shilla which were come out after the Liberation were connected with the Oriental cultural theory in the end of Japanese Imperialism.
As looking at the works of Seo Jeong-ju, presented from 1936 to 1942, the findings which cannot make us agree with the above argument are derived as follows:
First, although the pieces contained in his first collection seemed to assume Western inclination, the detailed expressions and the poet’s sense filled in them still explicitly revealed native and traditional characteristics. The poems in the book clearly take on mixed aspects of the Western directivity and native conventionality. More than half of the works included in the second poetical work created from 1939 to 1943 also formed the blend of the Western and native perspectives.
Second, the early poetry of Seo Jeong-joo was marked by wandering, conflicts, pains and anxiety. Most of those poems expose the figure of self wandering to find a new world. Going into a new world means finding something true and permanent. There is no separation between East and West, but only exists endless search for sincere and everlasting life; this is demonstrated as his yearn for the sea in his poetry. Seo Jeong-joo’s longing for absoluteness shown in his early work continued to appear in the work after the emancipation. It is known that his concerns for eternity had developed as a separate aspect from the Oriental spirit since the early poetry of Seo Jeong-joo.
Since the early poems by Seo Jeong-joo are mixed by Western and conventional aspects, it can’t be said that the poetry was changed from the Western tendency to the traditional disposition. The reasoning that pro-Japanese Oriental culture theory had effect on the change, thus, cannot be established. For Seo Jeong-ju’s quest for the spirit of Shilla is completion integrated by his pursuit of native character and eternity, and his spontaneous search, this is not associated with the Oriental culture theory, either.
