統一新羅時代 北原小京에 대한 고고학적 접근

국문 초록

통일신라시대에 설치된 5소경 중 원주지역에 설치된 것으로 알려진 북원소경은 관련 사료나 고고학적 자료가 부족하여 연구 성과가 미진하다. 기존 연구에서는 구체적인 근거 없이 원주지역에 북원소경이 설치되었음을 설명하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 최근의 고고학적 자료를 바탕으로 북원소경이 원주지역에 설치된 배경과 과정, 중심지 등을 고찰해 보았다. 신라 통일기 이전인 삼국시대까지 원주지역의 중심지는 법천리유적으로 대표되는 백제계 세력권인 남한강유역의 부론지역이었을 것으로 판단된다. 법천리유적 등에서 출토된 유물의 성격으로 보아 백제계의 강력한 토착세력의 존재하였음을 알 수 있다. 신라가 삼국을 통일한 이후, 지방통치체제를 강화하기 위해서는 이러한 토착세력의 존재를 약화시키거나 견제할 필요성이 있었다. 이를 위해서 중원소경에 인접하지만 또 하나의 소경을 설치가 필요하였다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 교통상의 입지라는 측면에서 북원소경이 자리 잡은 지역을 강원감영지 등이 위치하고 있는 치악산의 서쪽, 원주천유역인 현재의 원주시내지역으로 비정하게 한다. 이러한 추론을 가능하게 하는 고고학 자료들인 통일신라시대의 유물과 유적이 원주천유역인 현재 원주시내지역을 중심으로 확인된다. 현재의 원주시내지역의 고고학적 양상을 종합해 보면 이 지역은 신라 통일기를 즈음하여 본격적인 개발이 시작되었으며 통일신라시대 문화가 확실히 존재하고 있었음을 보여준다. 결국, 신라는 통일기에 이르러 남한강유역에 있던 기존 토착세력을 견제하고 새로운 교통상의 요지에 북원소경을 설치함으로써 지방통치체제의 정비를 추진했을 것이다. 따라서 북원소경의 설치를 계기로 원주권 문화의 중심지가 원주천유역인 현재 원주시내지역으로 옮겨진 것으로 보인다. 통일신라시대 북원소경의 설치와 더불어 원주시내지역은 원주권 문화의 중심으로 자리 잡게 되었다. 이후 원주지역은 고려시대와 조선시대에 이르기까지 강원감영지 등이 위치하고 있는 현재의 원주시내지역을 중심으로 발전해 왔다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Bukwonsogyeong was among five small capital cities in the Unified Silla Period, which is known to be established in the region of Wonju, Gangwon. However, it has not been studied well due to lack of historical records or archaeological finds. An existing theory that Bukwonsogyeong was established in Wonju area is based on without sufficient evidences. This study investigated on the background, the process, and the site showing how and where bukwonsogyeong was established in the area of Wonju by consideration of recently revealed archaeological evidences. Before the unification of Silla, an area of Buron in Namhan River basin is considered as a cultural and political center of the area where had been governed by people of Bakje origin by examination of the Bubcheonli site excavated in this area. Characteristics of the Bubcheonli site indicate existence of powerful people of Bakje origin. After unification Silla was necessary to weaken or restrain the indigenous forces to settle down local government systems. Thus another small local capital might have to be established in this area although it is located closely to Jungwonsogyeong. From consideration of a transportation aspect, in addition, location of Bukwonsogyeong can be inferred current urban area of Wonju in Wonjuchen basin, where is current site of the supreme local government office (Gamyoung) located on west side of Chiac Mountain. This inference was reached on the basis of archaeological materials, site of Unified Silla Period, which was excavated in current urban Wonju area. After considering all the archaeological aspects obtained from current urban Wonju area, it is apparent that the area have begun to grow since the period of unification of Silla and the culture of Unified Silla Period exists unambiguously in the remains. Silla consequently restrained the indigenous forces during the period of unification and tried to organize local government systems by installing Bukwonsogyeong at the emerging major transportation point. The establishment of Bukwonsogyeong, therefore, resulted in transfer of cultural hub of Wonju region to current urban Wonju in Wonjuchen basin. Urban Wonju area became a centre of culture of Wonju region through the establishment of Bukwonsogyeong in the Unified Silla Period. The region of Wonju, thereafter, has continuously developed and expanded around current Wonju area through Koryo Dynasty and Chosun Dynasty.
