국문 초록

거석기념물 축조가 사회정치적 발달과정에서 어떠한 역할을 하는지에 대해 설명하고자 하는 고고학적 노력이 어제오늘의 일만은 아니다. 거석기념물로서 지석묘가 가지는 사회적, 경제적, 정치적 의미에 대한 우리의 이해도 상당한 진척을 보이고 있다. 다만, 그러한 이해가 자료에 대한 체계적 분석이나 이론화작업에 근거한다기보다는 대략 우리의 상황에 부합할만한 서구 이론의 직접적 대입으로 일관되어 온 것도 부정할 수 없는 사실이다. 그러다보니, 서구의 이론적 사조나 설명논리가 변화할 때마다 대응적으로 우리의 설명논리도 변해왔다. 그러한 상황, 즉 비판적 수용의 부재는 독자적인 설명논리 개발의 정체로 이어지게 되었다. 주지하다시피, 남한지역 지석묘는 적어도 밀도라는 측면에서는 세계 어떤 지역 거석기념물보다 탁월하다. 이러한 양상은 자료가 가지는 어떠한 한계–부장의 한소함, 인골 발견의 미흡함 등–에도 불구하고, 개연적으로 설명되어야 할 부분이다. 본고는 이러한 점에 주목하면서 청동기시대 사회정치적 발달과정에서 지석묘 축조의 역할과 의미를 설명하는 독자적 논리 개발의 가능성을 모색한다. 본격적인 모색의 전초로 본고가 시도하는 것은 기존 선진사례 중 우리의 상황에 부합할 것들에 대한 비판적 검토이다. 사회적 역량투여의 통제, (사회)경제적역할, 경관고고학적 이해, 축조에 관련된 사회적 주체에 대한 이해 등의 측면에서, 거석기념물로서 지석묘가 가지는 사회·정치·경제적 함의를 되짚어보는 작업은 그러한 시도의 중요한 부분을 이룬다. 그러나 일련의 작업이 비단 서구 설명논리의 소개에 그치는 것이 아니라, 그 이론적 배경은 어떠하며, 우리 자료의 현상–시간, 공간, 형태 및 양적 측면에서 보이는 변이–에 비추어 그 설명능력은 어떠할지에 대한 예상을 포함한다.

영문 초록

It has long been explored and explained what kind of roles played by constructing megalithic monuments in the process of sociopolitical development in various parts of the globe. As well, understandings on social, economic, and political meanings of Korean dolmen (jiseokmyo), a form of megalithic monument have evolved in Korean archaeology. However, the understandings have based on not analyzing indigenous archaeological dataset or developing explanatory models suitable for it but simply adopting theoretical schemes conceived in American and European archaeologies. Thus, when theoretical trends in western archaeology have changed, explanation in Korean archaeology of parallel have shift. Lacking critical reception of explanatory models developed in western archaeology led a kind of retention in producing ones unique for Korean archaeology. As well known, Korea, especially southern part is the area where dolmens or megalithic tombs most densely distributed in the world. Despite some problematic aspect of data, such as rarity of burial goods and scarce findings of human skeletal remains, the characteristics related to the density should be plausibly explained. This paper pursues possibility of indigenous models explaining the relationship between sociopolitical development and construction of dolmens in the context of Korean Bronze Age. A critical reviewing some advanced method and theory and case studies that could provide a chance to gain insight in understanding on Korean dolmens’ patterns could be a good start point. It focuses on, among numerous issues relevant to megalithic monuments, several ones, such as the control of social energy consumed for constructing megalithic monuments, socioeconomic roles of megalithic monuments, construction of megalithic monuments in relation to past understanding, symbolizing, transforming and appropriating landscapes, and the relationship between social actors participating in constructing megalithic monuments. However, the attempt is not about simply introducing some methods and theories prevalent in western archaeology, but studying their backgrounds and anticipating their capabilities in explaining variation, in temporal, spatial, formal terms, shown in data of Korean dolmens.
