국문 초록

한반도에서 고대 삼국이 성립된 이후 충주는 영역확장 과정의 격전이 되는 중요 지역이었다. 그 원인으로는 한반도의 중심인‘중원’지역의 지리적 이점, 남한강의 편리한 교통 그리고 철이 풍부하게 매장되어 있는 곳이었다. 따라서 고대 삼국은 편리한 교통과 철의 안정적 확보를 위하여 중원지역의 중심인 충주를 두고 각축을 벌였다. 충주에는 지금까지 알려진 제철 관련 유적이 129개소에 이르며, 삼국시대부터 최근까지 오랜 시간동안 철생산이 활발하게 이루어진 지역이었다. 충주에서 철생산이 본격화되기 시작한 시기는 백제 한성기인 4세기 중반에 해당하는 것으로 확인되었으며, 고려시대에 접어들면서 다인철소(多仁鐵所)와 탄촌부곡(炭村部曲)을 국가적으로 운영하면서 지금의 이류면(利柳面)을 중심으로 제철유적이 집중적으로 분포하고 있다. 충주지역 제철유적에서 채집한 철광석에는 지르코늄(Zr) 성분이 다른 지역의 철광석보다 함유량이 높은 것이 특징이며, 티타늄(Ti) 성분이 높게 나타나는 유적은 충주에서 사철을 이용하여 철을 생산했을 가능성도 확인하였다. 본고에서는 삼국의 문화가 중첩된 중원문화의 성립 배경을 철로 규정하고 충주의 철생산과 관계된 유적의 현황과 성격을 정리하면서 채집된 유물에 대한 과학적 분석을 병행한 결과물을 중심으로 정리하였다.

영문 초록

After three ancient kingdoms were established, Chungju became an important area that was battled rigorously for expanding territory. The reasons were because it had a geographical advantage of ‘Jungwon’ area, the center of the Korean peninsula, and it was the place with a convenient traffic of Namhan River and plenty of iron. Therefore, those three ancient kingdoms continued heated competition for Chungju, the center of Jungwon area, to stably secure convenient traffic and iron. There are 129 places of relics related to iron making in Chungju and it was the area that iron production has been actively done for a long time from three kingdoms period until recently. The period that production of iron kicked into high gear in Chungju was confirmed as the mid-4th century, Hanseong-Baekjae period. And during Goryeo period, Da-In iron mills(多仁鐵所) and Tanchon-Bugok(炭村部曲) were nationally managed, and currently iron making relics are distributed with Iryu-myeon(利柳面) as a center. Iron ore, which is collected at iron making relics in Chungju area, shows higher zirconium(Zr) component than other areas. And considering the relics that show high titanium(Ti) components, there is a possibility that the iron was produced by using iron sand in Chungju. This study considered the iron as the background of establishment of Jungwon culture that three ancient kingdoms cultures are overlapped, organized present condition and characteristics of relics related to iron production and arranged collected relics as focusing on results that carried out scientific analysis.
