국문 초록

역사주의 건축은 새로이 도래한 산업기술 시대의 현실 속에서 과거의 형식을 현재의 용도에 맞게 ‘인용’한 건축적 흐름이였다. 그것은 과거와 현재의 관계를 인위적으로 재설정하여 문화적인 일체성을 이룩함으로써 거센 변화의 흐름에 대처하려는 노력의 일환이었다. 19세기를 거치며 역사적 양식의 수용은 서구 건축사의 모든 시기로 확대되었다. 신고전주의 건축이 현재와 과거의 차이보다는 영원히 새로움을 잃지 않는 고전적 전범의 연속성을 부각시킨데 반해, 낭만주의의 영향을 받은 네오고딕 건축은 호고적 관심을 넘어 역사의 권능에 대한 가히 종교적인 믿음을 견지했으며, 네오르네상스 건축은 성기 르네상스에 대한 객관적 인식을 건축적으로 재현했다. 산업기술의 발전이 증대될수록 과거의 전통에 대한 진지한 관심과 기능적 합리성의 추구라는 부르주아의 모순적인 요구를 모두 만족시키기는 힘들어졌기에, 과장된 전통과 과장된 가능성이 불안한 제휴를 이룬 네오바로크가 출현했다. 네오바로크 건축은 개별 건축물을 넘어 도시 전체의 경관에 개입하면서 극도의 절충주의적인 색채를 띠면서 역사주의의 마지막 불꽃을 작열시켰다. 역사주의 건축은 기능과 형식, 개체와 전체, 현재와 과거를 조화시키려는 역사주의의 근본이념을 다양한 건축적 형태언어를 통해 변주했던 ‘심미적 역사주의’의 백미로서, 역사주의가 단지 특정 분과에 국한된 흐름이 아니라19세기 부르주아 계층의 집단기억과 자기재현의 양식으로, 문화사 탐구의 유의미한 대상임을 웅변해준다.

영문 초록

Historicist architecture was the architectural trend which tended to utilize the traditional forms for modern use. It was an attempt to reestablish the relations of past and present, and thereby to recover cultural homogeneity which was lost in the changing world of the arising industrial society. Over the course of the nineteenth century the whole of the history of architecture became the object of historicist appropriation. While neoclassicism postulated the continuity of the classical “canons” which were supposed to keep everlasting novelty, nee-gothic architecture, indelibly associated with romanticism, relied on a kind of religious belief in history, and nee-renaissance architecture, for its part, architecturally represented a full understanding of High Renaissance. One should not ignore the fact hereby that the more industrial technology developed, the more at odds with each other were aesthetic tradition and functional rationality. Nee-baroque was then an end result of the architectural historicism, so that it relied on a very precarious balance between exaggerated tradition and exaggerated functionality. Taken together, historicist architecture can be viewed as the very core of the so-called “aesthetic historicism” which aimed at the typical historicist synthesis of function and form, individuality and whole, present and past. This point of view enables us to postulate historicism as a mode of collective memory and self-representation of the nineteenth century German middle class, rather than as a intellectual principle in any confined sphere.
