국문 초록

드로이젠은 평생 (1) 18세기 계몽주의 역샤학, (2) 독일 관념철학, (3) 19세기 실증주의 역사학 등 ‘세 개의 사조(思潮)’와 맞서 싸우면서 자신의 학문 세계를 구축해나갔다. 첫 번째 전선으로부터는 ‘역사에 대한 낭만주의적 견해’가, 두 번째 전선으로부터는 ‘역사학 방법론(Historik)’이, 세 번째 전선으로부터는 ‘해석학적 이해이론’이 각각 도출됐다. 그는 이 세 개의 사상적ㆍ이론적 토대 위에서 그 자신의 고유한 역사주의 이념에 도달했다. 먼저 드로이젠은 역사관찰의 대상을 ‘인륜 세계’로 규정하고, 이 대상을 관찰하기 위한 것으로 자연과학과 구별되는 ‘연구적 이해’라는 방법을 도입한다. 이 방법에 따르면, 인륜 세계 안의 모든 크고 작은 일들은 그것이 어떻게 생성되고 어떻게 변화되어왔는지가 중시된다. 그것은 ‘개체’와 ‘발전’에 바탕을 둔 랑케적 역사주의가 아니라, ‘기원’이나 ‘과정’에 근거한 비코적 역사주의의 노선을 따른 것이다. 더 나아가 그는 역사연구의 단위가 되는 ‘개체’보다도 개체와 전체와의 종합적이고 변증법적인 관계를 더 중시했고, 그러다보니 자연히 ‘개체의 고유성’만이 아니라 ‘발전적 연속성’도 함께 강조했으며, 궁긍적으로 역사가의 자기소거를 통한 역사연구의 객관성과 보편성을 지향하기보다는 그것의 불가능성을 통찰하고 주관적 자기인식에 기초한 주지주의적 관점을 견지하면서 독일적 역사주의와 많이 다른 길을 걸어 나갔다. 급기야 드로이젠은 현대의 포스트모던적 역사관에서 표방하는 태도와 접점을 이루는 사상까지 보유하고 있었음이 확인된다. 실제의 역사와 그에 대한 기록으로서의 역사 사이에는 엄청난 차이가 존재한다는 주장, 인식에 이르는 방법이 인식 대상의 수만큼이나 다양할 수 있다는 생각, 역사가 단지 역사를 관찰하는 사람들의 마음속의 이미지와 생각에 불과할지 모른다는 통찰 등은 19세기가 아닌 20세기적 사유에 속한다. 바로 이런 점들은 드로이젠의 역사적 견해가 시대를 초월해서 통용될 수 있는 보편적 역사주의로 이해되도록 만든다. 소독일주의적, 민족주의적 색깔에도 불구하고, 독일적 역사주의 노선보다는 비코적 또는 현대석 역사주의 노선을 더 많이 따르고 있다는 점에서, 드로이젠의 역사주의는 오늘날 우리에게 커다란 의미와 가치를 던져준다. 비코에게서 연원하는 원초적 의미의 역사주의를 19세기에 와서 여타의 독일 역사주의자들과는 다른 관점에서 새롭게 리모델링하면서 한 차원 격상된 역사주의 이념을 만들었다는 점에서, 나는 이것을 ‘드로이젠적 역사주의‘라고 부르고자 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the true nature of Droysen’s historicism from various angles and to find its significance that could still have influence on the present academic world. At first, Droysen had, in historical view and research, many common features with Vice: he defined “moral world (sittliche Welt)” as the object of historical study and introduced the method of “understanding by inquiring (forschend zu verstehen)” which is entirely different from that of natural science. It was for the method important to see any matter of moral world always in terms of its birth, course, change, etc. This was not the Rankean historicism in which the concepts such as “individuality“ and “development” played a core role, but the Vicoan historicism based on the notions such as “origin” and “process.” Futhermore, Droysen attached more importance to the dialectical relationship between an individual and the whole than to the individual in itself as unit of historical study. In result, he emphasized not only the uniqueness of an individual but also its developmental continuity and saw into the impossibility of an objective historical observation and research instead of having an illusion that historian could come to the pure objectivity of historical view by self-elimination. In this respect also, he went a different way from Ranke. At last, Droysen expressed the thoughts which are connected with the trend of post-modernism of our own days. His ideas that there is a great difference between the real history and the written history, that there are as many ways to cognition as objects of cognition, and that history might be nothing but an image or an idea of the past times, belong no longer to the nineteenth but the twentieth century. All these aspects make Droysen’s historical thoughts an ‘universal historicism’ which could offer us suggestions as to look out over history as a whole. I name it “Droysenean Historicism.
