영문 초록

It was in the sixth year of King Techong(太宗) of the Yi Dynasty (A.D. 1406) when the female doctor system was initiated, on the recommendation of Hŏ Do(許衟), a staff member of Cheseng-Wŏn(濟生院), which was then in charge of medicinal affairs. Confucian ethics of the day forbade man and woman over the age of seven from being acquainted if they did not know each other; most naturally, therefore, a male doctor was strictly forbidden to examine a woman patient and touch her skin. On account of the taboo, the female doctor system was established in 1406 in order that woman patients could have medical treatment. In twenty eight years after its establishment in the capital, the female doctor system was introduced in local districts as well. The female doctor condidates entered Cheseng-Wŏn to study medicine, and after completing the required courses of instruction, those from the capital city were assigned at Hyemin-Sŏ(惠民署), Ne’ŭi-Won(內醫院), and those from the countryside returned to their respective localities to give treatment to woman patients. In principle, the candidates were selected from among the female Government servants in the capital as well as in local districts but, in some exceptional cases, from among the illegitimate daughters of the nobles. Thus, many problems arose as to the selection, pay, marriage, offspring, etc. of the female doctor, as she was treated like a giseng(妓生). The number of female doctors then is not known, but it is certain that there were several hundreds of them in all medical organs in the country. The education and training for the woman doctor were intensive enough to make her a worthy doctor.
