영문 초록

The Kingdom of Kumaso(熊襲) was situated in the area extending from the southern part of Hyuga(日向) (a locality south of Kyushu, Japan) to Osumi(大隅) and Satsuma(薩摩) of the present day. Arai Hakseki(新井白石), Japanese historian, says that a tribe of Maek(貊) may have established the kingdom, while another Japanese linguist Kanazawa Shozaburo(金澤庄三郞) is of the opinion that the kingdom was in the same line as Silla because Sa(斯) of Sara(斯羅) (Silla (新羅)and So(襲) of Kumaso have the same etymology. As a result of his study, however, the writer has come to the conclusion that the Kingdom of Kumaso was in fact a country branched out of Bekje(百濟), Jun (隼) of Hayato(隼人), which is another namer of Kumaso, means Ŭng’jun(鷹隼), which again is another name of Bekje as seen in Chewang-Unki(帝王韻記). It seems, therefore, that Hayato was derived from Ŭng’jun, and Hayato and Ung’jun are the same name differently written.
