영문 초록

Ondal-Chŏn (溫達傳), which appears in Samkuk-Saki(三國史記)(A History of the Three Kingdoms), is a mixture of fiction and historical facts. That Ondal rendered meritorious services as a general is a true historical fact, while that he was a begging fool in his youth is unbelievable. The purpose of this study is to find out the reason why the story of Ondal being a begging fool was ever told. And the conclusion of this study is that Ondal was so stigmatized because his status as a noble was too low to marry a princess. It seems that the nobles of Kokuryŏ constituted several classes, according to which a “circle” of intermarriage - was established. The story of Ondal as a fool may have been created because the impossible was made possible. And the fact that Ondal of the lower class was able to become the King’s son-in-law may be a hint that the class system of the Kokuryŏ nobility was undergoing some change.
