영문 초록

In his study of Korean history, Shin Ch’e-Ho(申采浩) (1880~1936) attempted to systematize it from ancient history, focusing on (1) the evaluation of materials on ancient history and (2) the rise and fall of the Korean nation. Taking the history of Kokuryŏ as the main current in ancient history, in which is found the developmental foundation for the ancient state formation of the Korean nation. Shin established the northern limits of the Kokuryŏ territory along the Manchurian belt north of the Yalu and Tumen Rivers, the zone on Liao-Ho(遼河) (the Liao River) where battles were fought with the Han(漢) race of China, and the area northwest of the battle zone. His book “Chosŏn Sang go-sa(朝鮮上古史)” (An Ancient History of Korea) is understood on the assumption that the old territory of Kokuryŏ and the whole of the Korean peninsula were the area of activity for the Korean nation. Thus he theorized that the dispirited Korean history as seen in Kim Bu-sik’s(金富軾) Samkuk-Saki(三國史記) (A history of the Three Kingdoms), other history books of the same perspective, and the Japanese colonial view on Korean history in the first half of the twentieth century should be retraced to its original position in ancient times.
