순자(荀子)에서의 의(義), 리(理), 그리고 존(尊)

국문 초록

고대유가(古代儒家)에서의 의(義)를 살핀다. 특히, 순자(荀子)의 사상에서의 의를 두 관점에서 톺아본다. 첫째, 의를 통해 궁극적으로 지향되는 것을 살펴봄으로써 그 근본적인 토대를 파악한다. 이는 선진유가(先秦儒家)들, 특히 순자가 의를 통해 구현된다고 본 사회의 이상적인 상태를 이해함으로써 의의 궁극적 지향점을 파악하는 접근이다. 이 과정 중 그 이상적인 상태를 기술할 때 쓰인 개념으로서 리(理)에 주목한다. 둘째, 의를 구현하기 위해 요구되는 인간의 전형적인 태도의 특징을 밝힘으로써, 의가 어떻게 인간관계에서 실질적으로 실현가능하다고 봤는지를 살펴본다. 이 과정에서 순자가 어떻게 인간본성을 이해했고, 어떤 심리적 특성을 중심으로 인간과 동물 간의 경계를 그었으며, 어떠한 의미에서 그 특성이 존(尊)이란 태도의 기반이 된다고 봤는지를 밝힌다. 마지막으로 위의 두 접근을 토대로 의의 성격에 대한 종합적 파악을 시도한다. 이는 어떻게 의의 궁극적 지향점이 존의 태도를 기반으로 한 인간관계 속에서 실질적으로 실현된다고 봤는지에 대한 설명이다.

영문 초록

This paper discusses one of the central attributes in early Confucian thought, yi(義), especially, in the context of the thought of Xunzi(荀子). Yi is an ethical attribute that humans should adhere to, follow, act upon, or cultivate within themselves in order to create and maintain the ideal state for humans. Yi is related especially to the realization of an aspect of the ideal state that is expressed in the connotation of li(理), namely, the realization of a state in which every member of the entire human community occupies his or her proper position, plays his or her roles, and thereby is guaranteed attainment of his or her due in terms of various social shares, such as social recognition, wealth, governmental positions, tributes, and other material resources. The first part of this paper focuses on how yi is understood in terms of li. The second part is devoted to discussing the attitudes, such as gui(貴) and zun(尊), that enable humans to realize the aspect of the ideal state for humans that Xunzi thinks is achievable through the realization of li in human society. I suggest the use of the word “respect” to refer to those attitudes conveniently. Respect is the attitude that leads one to control one’s own desires in deference to another person’s desire because of recognition of the other person’s particular social status. In the conclusion, the nature of yi is explained eventually on the basis of the discussions of the previous two parts, particularly, by clarifying how yi is related to both li and respect.
