제국적 통합과 집권화의 이념

국문 초록

당대(唐代, 618­907) 유종원의 「봉건론(封建論)」은 유가 『오경』에 제시된 고대 성인통치의 이상을 부정한 파격적 문장이다. 그에 따르면, 인류의 역사는 통일제국으로 나아가는 상향적 통합의 과정이며, 고대의 분봉제는 역사발전의 낮은 단계일 뿐이다. 중앙권력의 잠식과 절도사의 발호를 경계한 이 글은 이후 중국 정치사상사의 최대담론 “봉건­군현” 논쟁을 촉발시킨 문제작이었다. 이 논문은 「봉건론」에서 그의 역사관과 문명론을 해석해 정치이론으로 구성한다. 우선 『오경』에 그려진 “봉건” 제도를 재구성하고, 유종원의 비판논리를 분석한 후, 양자를 비교해 “봉건­군현” 논쟁의 근원에 깔린 두 개의 서로 다른 세계관을 도출한다. 즉 한ㆍ당대 경학자들은 선정(善政)의 기초를 다자적 공존의 모델로 파악한 반면, 유종원은 일원적 통합의 모델을 제시해 제국적 질서의 불가피성을 주장했다.

영문 초록

Liu Zongyuan's “On Feudalism” is a provocative essay that denies the ideal rule of the sage kings of antiquity suggested in the Confucian Five Classics. According to his argument, the history of mankind is a bottom-up process of integration toward a unified imperial order. The enfeoffment system of antiquity was contrarily a low level of historical development. Composed during the mid­Tang crisis marked by the eclipse of the central government and the rise of military commissioners, this essay set off one of the most comprehensive political discourses in Chinese history, i.e., the fengjian v. junxian debate. This article reconstructs Liu's political theory by interpreting his conceptions of history and civilization, as reflected in this essay. I will first reconstruct the fengjian doctrine as presented in the Five Classics, and then analyze Liu Zongyuan's arguments against it. Then I will derive the opposing political visions and world-views that lie at the heart of the fengjian-junxian debate. The Han and Tang commentators generally believed that good government consists in the model of multilateral coexistence whereas Liu Zongyuan proposed the model of unilateral integration to argue for the necessity of a unified imperial order.
