영문 초록

Humans usually feel that there is something beyond a coherent, closed system of language. This nonverbal expression of silence, the external feature of the text, can be perceived by linking silence with death in the story and thus by linking mortal closure with textual closure. The structural doubling between these closures gives rise to suggestions of nonclosure of the ending in the text. Such open-ended text results as the writer retrospectively sees how the expectations generated by the teleological movement of the story are not met by actual ending of the story. The writer’s artistic quest for aesthetic meaning inevitably ends in the writer’s artistic defeat because of his/her awareness of the nonverbal segment of reality. Virginia Woof’s Mrs Dalloway reflects the failure of the artist’s effort to convey the true meaning of life through language and text. Clarissa’s party, the symbol of offering, is not one of life, but of death. Her desire to create a true center of life through her party is, therefore, frustrated, for it is impossible to create such a center in life without death. Clarissa and Septimus both are the coordinates of a structure of empty center. By the end of the novel the author has realized the impossibility of creating a text of true meaning through language and artistic form.
