Geoffrey Chaucer(1340?-1400) as an ancestor of English literature was the greatest poet in the history of English one. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that he well deserves the title “Father of English Poetry”, not only because he left us great masterpieces, but because he wrote in English. His was certainly important, though it is impossible to assess perfectly, its extent or its depth.
Chaucer’s life was not all sunshine, but he was always sunny and bright. In 1386, the French poet Eustache Deschamps sent a poetic salutation to his English contemporary, G. Chaucer. In it he hailed his fellow poet as a Socrates in philosophy, a Seneca in morality, an Aulus Gellius in practical affairs, and an Ovid in poetry.
But, it seems that many students of English departments have lost deep interests and attractions for Chaucer’s works of about 650 years ago. Of course, the language (Middle English) which he wrote and spoke in his time is also different from modern English; sound, form, syntax, vocabulary and versification.....etc., and so, my view is that these may be the reasons why they intend not to approach to Chaucer and his works.
Of course, Chaucer - his life and works - has been studied by many scholars; N. Coghill, G.G. Coulton, Curry, F.N. Robinson, J.M. Manly..... etc., and many other foreigners. They have studied on Chaucer’s whole life and works in many phases. But so far as I know, there are certainly many fields to study further on Chaucer and his literature as well as other authors, in the English literary fields in Korea. In these meanings, I think it must be fundamental to know the work ‘Troilus and Criseyde’ and what it really means. But, it is thousand pities that I should study this work, having not learnt middle English enough. Moreover, it is also one of difficulties for me to get the several authoritative reference books.
Troilus and Criseyde as a brilliant tragic romance, is a reworking of the material used by Boccaccio in his Il Filostrato. In this poem we are able to discover, emerging out of a medieval romance, what is virtually a great novel - the first modern novel.
My intentions are to seek out the connection between ‘Troilus and Criseyde’ and ‘Il Filostrato’ to know Chaucer’s literary value and doctrine included in his work, and to know his literary technique.
