국문 초록

춘향전 텍스트는 희곡이나 영화로 변용되어 현대에까지 이어지고 있다. 판소리 춘향가와 고전소설 춘향전류에 나타난 춘향의 욕망은 대중의 보편적인 욕망을 대변하고 있다. 그 보편적인 것마저도 실현될 수 없었던 사회에서 춘향의 욕망은 여염집 여인으로 살아가는 것이었다. 결국 춘향은 자신의 처절한 저항과 연인의 구원으로 욕망을 실현한다. 춘향전 독자들은 춘향전을 읽으면서 한편으로 낭만적 결연에서 오는 판타지를, 한편으로는 적대자를 물리치는 속 시원한 카타르시스를 경험하게 한다. 이런 춘향의 욕망은 인간의 가장 보편적인 욕망이지만, 이것이 당대 지배담론의 억압을 정절로 포장한 면이 있다고 해석하기도 한다. 소설이 상업적으로 유통되는 조선후기에 춘향전은 당대 향유층에게 상하층의 담론을 표출함으로써 이후 대중문화 형성의 계기가 되었다. 따라서 춘향전 인물의 욕망은 결국 춘향전 독자의 욕망의 반영이며, 현대 대중의 욕망과 통한다. 조선후기 고소설 방각본 출판은 소설사에서 매우 큰 의미가 있다. 판소리처럼 '듣고 보는' 텍스트가 아니라 '읽는 텍스트'로서 매체를 변화시켜서 전문독자층을 출현시킨 것이다. 또한 춘향의 욕망은 춘향전 독자의 보편적 욕망이므로 독자들은 작품을 읽고 카타르시스를 경험하게 된다. 이런 춘향의 욕망과 춘향전 독자의 욕망은 대중문화 출현의 토대가 되었다. 춘향전의 욕망과 춘향전 독자의 욕망구조를 지라르의 욕망이론을 중심으로 분석해 보는 작업은 고소설을 뒷방 창고에 갇힌 텍스트로 인정하는 현대인에게 춘향전을 자세히 읽게 하여 현대 대중문화와 상통하는 면이 있음을 발견하게 하는 데 의의가 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Why Chunhyangjeon is popular and changed to diverse genres until nowadays continuously as the classic novel is Chunhyang's desire is valuable to be accepted to modern people. Actually her desire is not the desire of the main character in the novel but reader's desire and the desire could have similarities with the structure of the society according to R. Girard. Focused on R. Girard's theory of the desire, this study analyzes the desire of modern drama viewers, Chunhyang's desire and the desire structure of Chunhyangjeon readers. The readers of Chunhyangjeon, mostly noble women's desire was the achievement of love but because of the polygamy in the order of Confucianism at that time, it was very hard to achieve the love. Then, noble women's desire mediator is gisaeng or Chunhyang. Chunhyang's desire formed the contemporary reader's normal desire. Also, this is reflected in popular drama in these days so it has common points with drama viewers' desire. Therefore, Chunhyangjeon promoted the novel distribution and made professional novel readers appear as reading text not as listening and watching text like Pansori of the late Joseon. In addition, the main character, Chunhyang's desire is general human desire and Chunhyangjeon readers' desire coincide with modern drama viewers' desire form rendering desire experience indirectly. Therefore, Chunhyang's desire is eventually the reflection of readers' desire and it is not too much to say that Chunhyangjeon is the original form of modern desire and present appearance of popular culture. It is the worth of classical novel education through the desire analyzing of Chunhyang and readers.
