함세덕 희곡 <산사람들> 연구

국문 초록

1990년대 중반 이후 함세덕의 <산사람들>(1949～50)에 대한 여러 연구물들이 나왔다. 제주4.3을 형상화한 이 희곡은 4.3이 진행 중이던 시기에 북한의 문예지 『문학예술』에 발표되었다는 점에서 충분히 주목할 만했다. 하지만 그간의 연구에서는 텍스트 문제와 제주4.3 인식의 고찰에는 소홀한 점이 있었다. <산사람들>에 대한 우리 학계의 연구는 2막 3장의 작품임을 전제로 진행되어 왔으나, 필자는 최근 제3막과 제4막 텍스트가 있음을 확인하였다. 미군정 수뇌부의 대책회의 관련 내용이 제3막에, 입산자들의 생활과 토벌대와의 싸움이 제4막에 각각 그려짐으로써 훨씬 풍부한 내용을 담고 있음을 알 수 있었기에, 이제 새로운 접근이 불가피하게 된 것이다. 그리고 이 작품은 제5막까지 있는 작품일 가능성도 있다. 1949년 평양에서 소년 빨치산 연락병 배역을 맡아 <산사람들> 공연에 참여했던 육철식이 5막 7장임을 분명히 증언하고 있기 때문이다. 전체의 내용과 짜임을 보더라도 육철식의 증언이 신빙성이 있어 보인다. 이 작품은 1948년 해주, 1949년.1950년 평양 등 총 3회 무대에 올려졌고, 2회 공연 후에 현전하는 대본이 완성된 것으로 판단된다. <산사람들>의 등장인물을 보면, 부을나.삼바우처럼 작가가 창조한 인물들도 있지만 실존인물과 관련된 인물들도 많다. 안재홍.송호성.김영배.조병옥 등은 실존인물이 그대로 나온 경우이며, 선우기승.부용철 등은 성이나 이름의 일부만 살짝 바꾸어 나온 경우이고, 김석민.최진렬 등은 특정 인물(혹은 둘을 뒤섞은 인물)을 모델로 삼은 것으로 추정되는 경우이다. 이러한 인물 설정 양상은 4.3이 반미 통일 투쟁이라는 점을 강조하기 위한 창작 의도가 반영된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이 작품에서는 또한 4.3 시기의 주요 사건들이 과장되거나 생략되어 나타난다. 4월 3일의 무장대의 전과(경찰과 우익 인사의 피해) 규모를 과장하고 있으며, 무장대와 국방경비대 사이에 합의되었던 4.28평화회담에 관해서는 전혀 언급되어 있지 않은 점에서 그것이 확인된다. 이는 무장대와 토벌대를 선악 구도로 몰아감으로써 봉기와 항쟁, 나아가 인민공화국 건설의 명분을 정당화하기 위한 의도를 드러낸 것이라고 할 수 있다. 김일성을 영웅으로 받들고 있는 점에서도 북의 전략이 반영된 작품임이 확인된다. 이러한 한계에도 불구하고 <산사람들>은 무장대와 제주민중들의 입산 생활이 잘 드러난 작품이어서 주목된다. 입산 투쟁을 하다가 월북한 인사들의 증언을 토대로 창작된 희곡이라는 점을 감안한다면 이 작품에서 그려진 입산 생활은 상당한 리얼리티를 확보하고 있다고 해도 무방하다. 따라서 함세덕의 <산사람들>은 4.3 당시의 입산 생활을 구체적으로 드러낸 작품이라는 점에서 그 의의가 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

"People in the Mountains" by Ham Se-duk (1949～50) is a play that depicts Jeju April 3rd Uprising. Particularly, it is worth drawing attention in that it was published in a literary magazine, Literary Arts while Jeju April 3rd Uprising was still going on. Until now, studies on "People in the Mountains" have been conducted on the presupposition that it consists of 2 acts and 3 scenes. However, act 3 and 4 have been found recently, thus a new approach is needed. And it is also likely that this play is composed of 5 acts. Lyuk Chul-sik clearly says that it had 5 acts and 7 scenes, who participated as a role of a messenger in the performance of "People in the Mountains." The overall content and plot makes his argument convincing enough. This work was performed three times: Haeju in 1948, Pyongyang in 1949 and 1950. It is assumed that the existing script was completed after the 2nd performance. Some of its characters are fictitious figures created by its author such as Bu Eul-na and Sam Ba-u, but many of them are related to real figures. Ahn Jae-hong, Song Ho-sung, and Cho Young-bae are real figures without any change. In case of Sunwoo Gi-seung and Bu Yong-chul, only their first or last names are changed a little. Kim Suk-min and Choi Jin-ryul are thought to be the mix of certain figures. It is safe to say that these characters are intentionally created in order to underscore Jeju April 3rd Uprising is an Anti-American unification struggle. In this work, major events during this period are exaggerated or sometimes omitted. Damages armed parties caused to police and right wingers are exaggerated, and April 28 peace talks between armed parties and national security forces are not mentioned. This shows the intention to justify the cause of the building People's Republic as well as the uprising and struggle by setting the framework of good and evil. Despite these limitations, "People in the Mountains" is worth attention because it shows the Jeju people's life in the mountains very well. Considering that this play is based on the witness given by people who fought in the mountains and then went to North Korea, it is safe to say that the life in the mountains depicted in this play has considerable reality. Therefore, Ham Se-duk's People in the Mountains" is said to be significant in that it concretely reveals the life in the mountains during Juju April 3rd Uprising.
