草書와 古文의 ‘簡’성 연구

국문 초록

본고는 21세기 정보화시대의 화두인 ‘속도’의 최대화에 대한 관심에서 시작되었다. 필자는 표의문자인 한자의 압축성은 그러한 속도 최대화의 한 대안이라 여겼고, 한자 문화의 양대 정수라고 할 수 있는 서예예술과 중국문학이 본래부터 내재하고 있었던 ‘簡’성을 살펴보는 작업은 현시대 고민의 한 해결책이라고 판단하였다. 특히 서예예술 중에서도 초서는 ‘簡’성을 지닌 대표적 예술이라 할 수 있으며, 중국문학에서 고문 역시 ‘簡’성을 띠고 있는 대표적 문학이라 할 수 있다. 이에 본문에서는 먼저 ‘簡’의 의미를 고찰해보고, 다음으로 초서의 ‘簡’성과 古文의 ‘簡’성을 살펴보았다. ‘簡’은 원래 간격을 두고 늘어놓은 대나무 牌木-죽간이나 목간을 가리키는 글자였다. 이러한 의미에서 ‘문서’, ‘편지’의 의미가 나왔고, 그에 쓰여진 내용이 간단하고 대략적이어서 ‘간략하다, 간결하다, 간소하다’의 의미도 파생되었다. 그러나 훗날 문학이나 예술, 역사, 문화 등 다양한 분야에 적용된 ‘簡’의 의미는 단순한 간단함이 아니라, ‘두루 수용한 후의 정제된 간결함’이라는 의미로 쓰인다. 그것은 반복과 축적의 정화로, 정제 ․ 도약 ․ 질적 성숙을 걸쳐 형성된 ‘結晶’이라 할 수 있다. 그러므로 중국문예비평문에서는 ‘簡要’, ‘簡貴’와 같은 단어가 자주 보인다. 그러한 ‘簡要’, ‘簡貴’와 가장 잘 어울리는 분야는 아마도 중국 서예예술 중의 ‘초서’라 할 수 있을 것이다. ‘草’자는 원래 아주 거칠고 단정하지 못하다는 의미에서 출발하였는데, 이러한 ‘草’자의 의미가 함축되어 있는 ‘초서’는, ‘간략’과 ‘생략’을 핵심으로 한다. 본래 편하고 빠르게 일을 처리하기 위하여 만들어진 초서는, 보기에는 쉽고 간단한 글씨인 것 같지만, 기능적 ․ 정신적 ․ 사상적 측면을 두루 갖춘 후에, 외부로는 ‘簡’으로 표출된, 중국 예술에서 ‘簡’성을 지닌 최고의 경지라 할 수 있다. 중국문학에서는 古文에 ‘簡’성이 잘 드러나 있다. 고문의 이러한 경향은 ‘한자’라는 중국 문자의 특성과도 관련되어 있다. 중국문학에서 절구나 小令이 중시되는 것은 간결한 형식 안에 다 말하지 않으면서 오히려 더 큰 것을 전해내는 특징이 내재되어 있기 때문이다. 그 ‘簡’이 단순한 ‘簡’이 아니라 ‘要’를 내재한 ‘簡’이라 할 수 있다. 현대 학문과 예술이 범하고 있는 가장 큰 문제점이라면 ‘기본’이 전제되지 않는 ‘능숙함’이라 할 수도 있을 것이다. 초서와 고문에 담겨있는 이러한 ‘簡’성을 살펴보는 것은 구체적 ‘속도 해결’의 한 단초가 될 뿐 아니라, ‘기본’의 중요성을 되새기는 계기가 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This thesis is started from the interest about maximization of velocity which is main point of the age of information in 21 century. I consider briefness of Chinese letter to be the alternative of such a velocity maximization. I think that East-Asia calligraphy(especially Cao-shu) and Chinese literature(especially classic literature) is the solution of maximization of velocity. In the main part of this thesis, first, I study the meaning of 'briefness', second, briefness of Cao-shu(草書) and briefness of classic literature. Chinese letter ‘Jian(簡)’ is the letter indicating bamboo plate originally. Corresponding message is derived from above mentioned meaning. Because the contents of the letter is very brief and short, being brief and being short is derived from it. But In the latter age, the meaning of ‘Jian(簡)’ that is applied to literature, history, art and so on is not briefness but refined briefness including various factors. Such a refined briefness probably get along with East-Asia calligraphy ‘Cao-shu’. The letter 'cao(草)' is originated from the meaning of harshness and untidiness, ‘Cao-shu’ including such meaning concentrates on briefness and omission. Originally ‘Cao-shu’ made for doing things conveniently and fast is seemingly simple and easy but is called the supreme field of briefness if expressed after it is equipped with functional, mental, philosophical factors. In the Chinese literature, classic literature express briefness well. This tendency is concerned with the character of Chinese letter. Jue-go(絶句) or Xiao-ling(小令) which is composed of short sentences transfers the bigger things on the contrary. But such a briefness is not simple shortness, but shortness including essence. I think that one of the problems of modern sciences and arts is the sophistication without basis. Studying such briefness contained in ‘Cao-shu’ and classic literature is not only starting point for solution of velocity problem but also turning point that we realize the importance of basis.
