국문 초록

본 연구는 1965년 미국의 이민법 개정이후 증가하기 시작한 재미 한인에 대한 연구이다. 특히 기존의 대도시 중심의 연구에서 벗어나 중소 도시 재미한인사회의 형성과 발전에 대하여 인디애나폴리스 지역의 사례를 연구하였다. 구체적으로 인디애나폴리스 초창기 시절 한인들의 구술과 한인회보 등의 자료를 이용하여 한인교회, 한글학교, 한인회를 중심으로 단체들의 성립과 발전 그리고 변화와 갈등을 통하여 인디애나폴리스 한인 사회의 역사를 재구성하였다. 이 글 2장에서 인디애나폴리스 한인 사회의 전반적인 개관을 다루었고 3장에서는 초창기 한인 사회의 모습을 서술하였으며 4장에서는 한인교회, 한글학교,한인회 등의 설립 시기와 설립 동기와 그 과정 그리고 주요한 활동과 기능을 중심으로 인디애나폴리스 한인 사회의 발전을 서술하였다. 5장에서는 교회의 변화와 갈등이 한글학교와 한인회의 활동에 영향을 미쳐 인디애나폴리스 한인 사회의 분열과 약화를 가져오게 된 과정을 서술하였다. 인디애나폴리스 한인 사회의 형성은 1960년대 후반부터 시작되었다. 50년대말 군인 신부의 자격으로 미국에 이주한 한인 여성들의 모임이 있었지만 60년대말 부터 유학생과 전문가들로 이루어진 그룹들이 등장하면서 1970년대 초 한인교회, 한인회, 그리고 한글학교 설립으로 시작되어 발전하였다. 대도시 한인 사회와는 달리 한인회의 활동이 거의 중지된 상황이었고 여타 지역에서와 마찬가지로 한인 교회가 종교적인 측면뿐 만 아니라 이민 생활에서 필요한 사회적 필요를 충족시키며, 또한 자아실현의 장으로서의 기능도 한인 사회 내에서 한인 교회가 담당하고 있었다. 미국의 중소 도시 인디애나폴리스에서의 한인 사회의 형성과 전개 그리고 성격과 역할 역시 한인 교회가 그 중심에 있었다. 이렇게 한인교회가 한인 사회의 존속과 발전을 가능케 한 중추적 역할을 한 것도 부인할 수 없는 사실이지만 과도하고 편중적인 한인 교회의 역할과 그 분열로 인해 한인 사회의 응집력을 분산시키는 등 발전에 걸림돌이 되고 있는 것도 한인교회였던 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper is the case study on the establishment and development of the Korean community in Indianapolis,which is one of the American small-medium cities and where Korean immigration to the US has greatly increased since the 1965 reformed Immigration Law, so thereby the study is going to keep out of being focused on big cities. Specifically said, it investigates the Korean community in Indianapolis through Korean churches, Hangeul schools and, their changes and conflicts in the early days of Indianapolis. For this, the is applied to the study. In the studies on Korean communities in the US since 1965, the existing literature is not adequate enough to describe Korean communities at that time. And the initial generation of immigration to the US have been still alive, so hopefully, it would be possible to dynamically depict the siuations of those days with their oral statements. Chapter 2 generally outlines the Korean community in Indianapolis. Chapter 3 describes the early aspects the Korean community had. Chapter 4 gives a description of the Korean community in Indianapolis, centering around the establishment period, motives, process, main activities and functions of Korean churches, Hangeul schools and Korean associations. Chapter 5 portrays a disruption of the Korean community with the changes and conflicts of Korean churches, and in particular, looking into what effect they had on the changes of the other groups, and therefore shows the process of how those effects led to weakening Hangeul schools and Korean associations. The Korean community in Indianapolis began to be established since the late 1960s. Korean women who immigrated as soldiers' wives to the US had a gathering in the late 1950s. Since the late 1960s, some groups comprised of Korean students studying in the US and professionals turned up, and the Korean community began and developed with the establishment of Korean churches, Hangeul schools and Korean associations in the early 1970s. Different from the Korean communities in big cities, the activities of the Korean associations in Indianapolis were nearly suspended, and the Korean churches met needs both spiritually and socially for Korean immigrants. Also, they played a role as the field for realizing his/her own dreams. It was Korean churches that remained in center of the establishment and development of the Korean community in Indianapolis, the American small-medium city, which is showing the nature and role of a community. Like this, it needs hardly to be said that the Korean churches played a critical role in turning the existence and development of the Korean community into a possibility. However, it was Korean churches that became an obstacle in the development of the Korean community by dispersing its cohesion due to excessive roles and dissolution of Korean churches with too much emphasis.
