국문 초록

이 논문은 불가리아어에서 나타나는 형태음운론적인 현상의 하나인 jat' Umlaut를 다루고 있다. 불가리아어에서 역사적으로 저·장모음인 jat'는 강세와 후행하는 자음의 자질(경자음 vs. 연자음)에 따라e 혹은ja로 발전되었다. 방언, 역사적 유추, 그리고 다양한 형태론적인 과정을 거침에 따라 현대 불가리아어의 모음교체는 기존의 jat'의 대응형(reflex)과는 상이한 형태로 나타난다. Jat'에 대한 기존의 연구는 단순히 통시적(historical jat'를 현대 불가리아어의 공시적 음운론에 적용)이거나 엄격하게 기술적(모음교체를 유발하는 기저분절의 본질에 대한 언급 없이)으로 접근해 오는 경향이 뚜렷했다. 이 논문에서는 기저 음소인 /je/를 설정하고 이 관점에서 jat' Umlaut의 문제에 접근하고자 한다. 이 접근은 1) 추상적인 underlyingě를 설정하지 않는 다는 점, 그리고 2) 일정 모음교체현상(e와a)를 제외한 다른 추가적 규칙이 필요하지 않다는 면에서 간결하지만 통찰력 있는 분석을 제공한다. 마지막으로 이 논문에서는 필자가 주장하는 분석방법의 다양한 결과, 형태론적으로 구현되는 어미에서의 jat'의 status, 그리고 각각의 슬라브어별 특수현상과 그 본질에 대해 논하고 있다.

영문 초록

This article provides a new analysis of an old and intractable problem in Bulgarian morphophonemics: the jat’ Umlaut. Generally speaking, in literary Bulgarian the reflex of the historical long low front vowel jat’ (ě) is either e or ja, depending upon stress and the hard/soft nature of the following consonant. Due to dialectal mixing in the literary language, historical analogies, and its involvement in various morphological processes, the modern Bulgarian vowel alternation has lost its direct connection with the historical vowel jat’, and must now beanalyzed independently. Existing analyses are either strictly historical (encoding historical jat’ into the synchronic phonology of modern Bulgarian) or strictly descriptive (taking no position on the nature of the underlying segment which triggers this vowel alternation). The analysis proposed in this article posits and underlying sequence of /je/ as the host for the jat’ Umlaut. This analysis is aradigmatically simple (no abstract underlying ě) and syntagmatically clean (no additional rules required aside from the unavoidable alternation of e anda, i.e., the vowel alternation that comprises the phenomenon). The article then addresses several consequences of this proposal, including its effect on the paradigmatic phonemics of Bulgarian (elimination of underlying palatalized consonant phonemes), the status of the jat’ Umlaut in morphological desinences, and the nature and idiolectal variation in lexical processes like the jat’ Umlaut.
