백도기의 <본시오 빌라도의 手記>와 복음서의 상호 텍스트성 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 백도기의 단편 소설 <본시오 빌라도의 手記>를 복음서의 전승과 상호 텍스트적 관계에서 분석했다. 백도기는 등단 초기부터 현실의 부조리에 대한 기독교인의 자기 성찰과 비판적 인식에 바탕을 두고 작품을 창작하고 있다. 또한 목회자라는 신분에도 단순히 호교적 차원의 종교문학에 머물지 않고, 오히려 제도화된 종교로서의 기독교에 대한 신랄한 비판과 부정을 서슴지 않고 있다는 점에서 주목받고 있다. 그리고 인간 존재의 실존적․사회적 조건에 대한 성찰을 바탕으로 이 세계의 진상을 폭넓게 진술했다는 점에서 기독교 소설사의 비중 있는 작가로 평가받는다. 본 연구의 대상인 <본시오 빌라도의 手記>는 예수의 십자가 처형에 직접적으로 관여된 ‘빌라도’라는 인물을 서사의 전면에 등장시킴으로 예수의 죽음에 대한 인간적 고뇌와 씻을 수 없는 회한을 형상화하고 있다. 그리고 고뇌하는 빌라도의 모습 속에서 이 시대의 ‘권력’과 ‘책임’이라는 문제의 상관성에 대해 성찰하고 있다. 필자는 본 연구에서 복음서의 전승과 여타의 역사적 전승들이 백도기의 소설에서 어떻게 형상화되고 있는가를 상호 텍스트적 맥락에서 비교 분석을 시도했다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 빌라도의 항변에 담긴 의미의 타당성을 논증하고, 아울러 빌라도에 대한 작가의 옹호와 변명에 담겨진 기독교적 사유의 특질에 접근을 시도했다. 그 결과 신으로부터 권력을 위임받은 통치자란 ‘진리’와 ‘선’과 ‘정의’에 근거해서 ‘그 시대의 불의와 행악’에 맞서는 것이 절대적 사명이며, 따라서 그러한 불의와 행악을 막지 못한 책임이 전적으로 통치자에게 있다는 작가의 현실적 역사인식을 도출할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This research analyzes the Old Testament of the Gospels and ｢Memorandum of Pontius Pilate｣, a novelette written by Do-gi Baek, in inter-textual relations. Since his first proceed to the platform, Baek has been writing literatures based on the examination of conscience and critical cognition of a Christian on the absurdity of reality. Despite of being a Pastor, he is being noted for not limiting his work to a simple religion-favoring writings, but rather to make cutting remarks and denial of an institutionalized Christianity. He is also portrayed to be an influential author of the Christian Novel Society for his thorough statements on human being’s examination of existential & social condition of this world. The subject of this research, ｢Memorandum of Pontius Pilate｣, illustrates human suffer and irrevocable repentance on the death of Jesus by fully presenting in its prologue, a character named ‘Pilate’, who was directly involved in the crucifixion of Jesus. The novel is also exploring the correlation between today’s authority and accountability issues from the sufferings of Pilate. A Comparative Analysis on how the Old Testament of the Gospels and the other historical Testaments are demonstrated in Baek’s novel has been attempted in this study in a context of inter-textuality. Based on this analysis, argument on meaning and pertinence of Pilate’s contradiction was made. In addition, the author’s vindication and justification implying the Christianized reasons are approached. Conclusion was reached following these attempts: for the Leaders, whose authority was delegated from God, holding out against ‘immorality and evil of the generation’ while rendering ‘truth’, ‘virtue’, and ‘justice’ is an absolute responsibility. Accordingly, the author’s extensional appreciation of history, in which the Leaders are to be blamed entirely when they can not defend against such immorality and evil, can be derived as well.
