국문 초록

지성이란 “개인과 공동사회로 하여금 습관, 관습, 제도, 그리고 신념과 새로운 조건 들 간의 능동적인 관계를 효과 있게 함으로써 직면한 문제들을 해결할 수 있도록 조력하는 것”(Ratner, 1975: 452)이라고 할 수 있다. 다시 말해서 지성은 문제 상황을 해결하는 능력인 것이다. 듀이에게서 지성은 인간의 삶을 구성하고 경험을 효과적으로 조직하고 변형시키며 바람직한 인간으로서 성장을 도모할 수 있게 하고 사회를 민주화시키는 수단이다. 듀이는 개인과 사회를 유기적인 상호작용이 발생하는 관계로 보았다. 또한 그는 사회개조의 중재자로서 지성적 방법을 강조하여 특히 ‘사회적 지성’이란 개념을 사용하여 사회 구성원들의 집단적 문제를 해결하는 지적 수단으로 보았다. 이는 민주주의의 특징이 공동관심의 범위가 확장되게 하고 개인의 능력을 충분히 발휘되도록 하는 것으로 보면, 개인의 능력 개발에는 지성의 힘이 필요하다는 것을 의미한다. 듀이에게서 사회적 지성은 도덕적 문제해결에 있어서 집단적, 민주적 방법의 또 다른 명칭이다. 그리고 이 사회적 지성은 최고 이상인 민주주의로 귀착된다. 지성은 낡은 습관을 개선하고 잘못된 사회제도를 개혁함으로써 민주주의를 건설하는 것이 목적이 되는 것이다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this study is to analyse the intelligence and society in John Dewey’s educational theory, and to find out some suggestions for our current education. In the social point of view, intelligence as a method of solving the social problems is called ‘social intelligence’. According to Dewey, democracy means a way of thought, and a mode of action and of living itself. Therefore, Dewey examines the process and the results of growth and experience, and he seeks democratic solution of social concord in intelligence. Aims of education are derived from educational activity, and scientific inquiry of educational activity is changed continuously by intelligence. Moreover, the orientation of educational activity is also controlled by intelligence. His educational method emphasizes the aids of intelligent and reflective thinking, the thinking process which derives rational problem solving. And democratic method means the method of intelligence based upon democracy. Then, the term ‘democratic’, ‘intelligent’, and ‘scientific’ may be same. So, to develop intelligent method means to expand the democratic method and scientific method to a certain extent. The high aim of social intelligence a social method lies in construction of democratic society what Dewey called democracy. Democracy to Dewey is rather a way of life than a political institution. This democracy can be realized by democratic method. Therefore the important duty of education in Dewey depends upon the development and growth for the use of democratic and method. In conclusion, the primary aim of social intelligence as social method lies in construction of democratic society what Dewey called democracy.
