대진(戴震)의 불교비판과 주지주의 윤리학

국문 초록

대진은 청대학술을 대표하는 고증학자이다. 당시 고증학자들은 일반적으로 송명 유학이 제기한 세계의 보편 질서나 인간의 본성 같은 철학적 논의에 참여하길 꺼렸다. 하지만 대진은 직접적으로 이 논의에 뛰어 들었다. 그는 송명 유학자들의 주요한 주장은 불교의 개념을 가져왔다고 비판한다. 대진은 송명 유학이 불교의 영향을 받아서 유학을 내면주의로 해석했다고 말한다. 이렇게 함으로써 지식을 통한 점진적인 자아완성의 길이 차단되고 내적 직관을 지향하게 됐다고 평가한다. 유교 경전을 문헌학적으로 엄밀하게 연구하고 지성의 확대를 지향한 고증학자로서 송명 유학자들의 저런 방식을 수용할 수 없었다. 경서에 대한 학술적인 연구와 성인의 말씀에 대한 차분한 이해가 하나의 수양일 수 있음을 천명한다. 대진은 유학이 가진 자아의 도덕적 완성이라는 근본적 목표를 고증학 내에서 완성하고자 노력했다. 필자는 이것을 주지주의 윤리학이라고 명명해 본다.

영문 초록

Dai Zhen was one of the major scholars of k'ao-cheng scholarship, a form of evidential research prevalent in the Qing dynasty. Most k'ao-cheng scholars were reluctant to take part in the philosophical discussions about the world's universal order or human nature that were raised by the neo-Confucian scholars of the Sung and Ming dynasties. However, Dai Zhen involved himself in these discussions. He citicized the Sung-Ming neo-Confucian scholars for adopting Buddhist concepts to establish their central argument. Dai Zhen insisted that neo-Confucian scholars of the Sung and Ming dynasties saw Confucianism as an interiorized thought under the influence of Buddhism. He stated that this blocked the path to gradual self-fulfillment through knowledge and internal insight. As a k'ao-cheng scholar who worked toward studying Confucian scriptures thoroughly by using philological methods and expanding human intellect, he could not accept the methods that Sung-Ming neo-Confucian scholars proposed. He demonstrated that an academic research of Confucian scriptures and serious understanding of sages' words is a way of self-culture. Dai Zhen tried hard to fulfill the fundamental Confucian goal of moral self-fulfillment within the field of philology. I call Dai Zhen's attempt intellectualist ethics.
