천태 四悉檀의 사상적 특징 고찰

국문 초록

천태 사실단의 구조와 사상적 특징에 대해 『법화현의』를 중심으로 살펴보면 다음과 같은 사실을 알 수 있다. 첫째 천태는 十重으로 사실단을 해석하고 있으며, 이것은 『대지도론』에서 주장하는 사실단의 내용과 다르게 인식하는 것이다. 둘째 천태가 생각하는 사실단의 핵심은 부처와 중생의 관계성이 무엇인가에 중점을 두고 있다. 따라서 중생의 근기와 성품, 欲樂이 다르다는 점에 착안하고 있으며, 그것이 感應의 관계 속에서 자비를 구현하기 위한 수단으로 인식되고 있다. 셋째 천태는 사실단을 활용해 敎觀兼修의 필요성과 圓融性을 주장하고 있다. 넷째 천태는 사실단을 해석하는데 있어서 互具互融이나 四句의 논리를 활용하고 있다. 그러나 천태가 활용하고 있는 사구논리는 매우 주체적이고 자의적이란 점에서 동시대 혹은 그 이전 시대에 활용한 삼론사상가들의 변증적인 사구분별과 다르다.

영문 초록

We can understand the system and the philosophical features of the four siddhanta(四悉檀) explained by Tiantai(天台) in the propound meaning on the Lotus sutra-sastra as below. Firs, Tiantai explains the four sddhanta using the notion of sibjoong(十重). This means that Tiantai understood and explained the four siddhanta as the Buddha's teaching method, which is different from the notion of four siddhanta in the Mahaprajnaparamitasastra. Secoud, the key-point of the siddhanta understood by Tiantai is the relationship between the Buddha and human beings. So, he emphasizes the differences of human beings like their fundamental abilities, personality, and wants, and he understood the four siddhanta as the method to embody compassion in the relation of the divine respons. Third, Tiantai holds the complete combination(圓融) and the need of the unity between the learning of Buddhist doctrines and the meditation practice(敎觀兼修) using the idea of the four siddhanta. This shows that Tiantai holds the unity between the learning tradition in the south part of China and the zen tradition in the north part of China at that time. Fourth, Tiantai applies the logic of hoguhoyung(互具互融) and the four terms of differentiation(四句分別), when he analyzes the notion of the four siddhanta. However, his logic system of the four terms of differentiation shows the different features of the dialectical logic of the Sanlun logicians in Tiantai's former times on the point that the notion of the four terms of differentiation by Tiantai is very independent and subjective.
