朝鮮 後期 僧傳의 變異양상

국문 초록

본고는 조선후기 僧傳에 나타나는 변이상을 살펴보는데 초점을 둔다. 문학사상 이른 시기에 출현하여 지속적으로 창착, 수용된 僧傳은 나름의 형식과 내용을 유지해 왔으나 조선시대에 들어오면서 그런 담론적 관습이 허물어진다는 점을 주목한 것이다. 고려이전에는 儒者가 쓴 승전일지라고 승전의 담론의 규범을 준수하는 것이 관행이었다. 그러나 申光洙의 「劍僧傳」, 「虎僧傳」, 丁範朝의 『梨化庵老僧傳』李鈺의 「浮穆漢傳」등 18세기 활약한 유자들의 작품에서는 전통적 의미가 승전과는 거리가 멀다. 이들 승전은 승려를 주인공으로 하고 있기는 하나 유가의 가르침이 얼마나 잘 구현하고 있는지에 관심을 집중시키고 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 출가 이후의 삶에 초점을 맞추어야 마땅한 일임에도 위 작품들은 나라에 때한 충성심, 스승에 대한 지극한 존경심 등을 통해 주인공의 덕성을 미화하거나 유교적 인간의 전형을 제시하는데 열의를 보이고 있다. 승려를 천민으로 대하며 전기적 대상으로 수용하기조차 꺼리는 풍조에서 승려를 傳記化한 태도는 높이 살만하다. 그러나 僧傳이란 표제를 내건 채 儒家의 이념을 복무시키는데 만 열중하는 것은 일종의 횡포가 아닐 수 없다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on examining the change that is shown in Seungjeon(僧傳) of the late Joseon period. Seungjeon first revealed a distinct difference from a Confucian scholar's biography in form and content, Even in a Buddhist monk's biography written by a Confucianist, Seungjeon didn's escape from the character in a normative discourse. However, its traditional meaning cannot be found in the works of Confucian scholars who had been active in the 18th century such as Shin Su-gwang's Geomseungjeon(劍僧傳), Hoseongjeon(虎僧傳), Jeong Beom-jo's Ihwaamnoseungjeon(梨化庵老僧傳), and Lee Ok's Bumokhanjeon(浮穆漢傳). Seungjeon decribed by Confucian scholars of the 18th century had a Buddhist monk as a hero, but is concentrated its interest in how well a Confucian scholar's teaching is being implemented. When it comes to Seungjeon, it may be naturally suitable only when focusing on life after becoming a Buddhist monk. However, these Seungjeon find out an anecdote in the mundane world and respect for a teacher as a hero's achievements of lifetime before being a Buddhist priest. In other words, the aim of the writings was to be a model for a Confucians. In the Joseon dynasty, Buddhist monks were treated as humble, and thereby a Buddhist monk's life was prohibited to be made as a biography. So, Seungjeon cannot help being considered as Confucian scholar's unfair criticism.
