국문 초록

본 연구는 근대교육의 대안으로서 전통 교육사상을 들 때 개체성의 결여 문제를 놓고 과연 전통사상이 개체성의 이해를 결여하고 있는가를 집중적으로 분석하고자 한 것이다. 화엄 사유에서 인간 개체는 곧 전체로서 보편성과 특수성을 동시에 지닌다. 개체는 전체로부터 독립되어 존재하는 것이 아니라 전체와의 관련 속에서 존재한다. 우주와 한 몸을 이루는 개체는 '인연이 서로 의지하여' 스스로 하나(전체)의 모습을 이루고 '각각의 인연이 구별되어' 개별성을 지닌다. 또한 개체는 다양한 인연 조건들의 끊임없는 변화로 그 종류가 중중 무진한 것이 된다. 살아 있는 한, 그리고 존재하는 한 모든 존재는 활동하고 변화한다. 화엄적 사유에 있어서 개체성을 실현한다는 것은 각기 다양한 환경으로 맺어지는 인연과의 관계 속에서 상호 의존되어 있음을 깨달아 공진화하는 성장을 일컫는다. 한편 성리학의 '이일분수(理一分殊)'는 불교 화엄사상으로부터 영향 받은 것으로 특히 화엄 육상의 동상(同相)과 이상(異相)을 주목해볼 필요가 있다. 성리학의 현실주의는 개체의 정해진 리와 구체적인 작동방식을 통해 이루어지는 전체의 조화에 중심을 두었다. 주희에게 있어 개별리는 노장사상처럼 무한한 혼돈으로 나타나거나 가립된 無常으로서의 무아·空이어서는 안되었다. 그리고 묵자처럼 무조건적으로 무차별적인 보편적 사랑으로 드러나는 것도 옳지 않다고 보는 것이었다. 그것은 언제나 개별자로서 그리고 그가 처한 혈연적 사회적 맥락과 구체적인 상황 하에서 친소에 따라 단계적, 차등적으로 발현되는 理여야 했다. 퇴계가 제시한 이기호발과 율곡이 주창한 이통기국은 주희의 이일분수를 보완한 것으로 독창적인 성격을 지닌다. 그러나 모두 공통적인 것은 五常의 윤리를 실현하는 것에 개체의 완성을 두고 있다 할 것이다. 이에 화염, 주자, 퇴계, 율곡 등 각자 갖는 인간 개체성의 이해에 따라 그 교육이 추구하는 바 그 인간형성이 무엇인지를 파악해 보고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes whether the concept of individuality exists in Korean traditional thought. Some claim that traditional thought cannot serve as an alternative for modern education due to its lack of understanding of individuality. According to the thoughts of Hwaeom, an individual human being has universality as well as particularity. An individual is not separated from the whole, but co-exists with others relating to each other. An individual as a part of the universe depends on bonds with others. At the same time, each relation is distinctive. Furthermore, the various conditions of individual relations continue to change, and thus the individuals coexist in many kinds of relations. As long as an individual exists, it keeps acting and changing. In the thought of Hwaeom, realizing individuality does not mean competition. The individuals should evolve together recognizing that their relations are interdependent. All beings including rivers and trees live in harmony with each other and emphasize the importance of the whole. Hence no fight or competition. 'Iilbunsu' of Neo-Confucianism is influenced by Hwaeom Yuksang of Buddhism. Iilbunsu(理一分殊) is Zhu xi's theory which insists that the theory on universality and the theory on particularity have something in common. Hwaeom Yuksang(華嚴六相) refers to six attributes of all beings explained by Hwaeom. Particularly, it is closely related with Dongsang(同相), all beings have attributes to cooperate and live in harmony and Isang(異相), all beings have their own distinctive forms and characteristics among the six attributes. The realism of Neo-Confucianism emphasized the harmony of the whole. Zhu xi criticized Taoism, which explained individuality as uncertainty and an individual should abandon its ego. In addition, Zhu xi disagreed with Mozu, who emphasized the greatest good for the greatest number saying one should love all people equally. Neo-Confucianism insisted that the level of love and respect that one show must be different according to the individual's relations and social circumstances. Toigye's theory, Igihobal(理氣互發) and Youlgok's theory, Itonggiguk(理通氣局) are influenced by Iilbunsu(理一分殊) but unique. Therefore, it is meaningful that how Hwaeom, Zhu xi, Toigye and Youlgok's understandings of individuality affect the education in forming personality.
