This thesis is in Sang- Lee who occupies one of the most important places in history of Korean modernism literature. This is proceeded on the premise that literature is a form of communication through language and fiction is organized by it also. The purpose of this study is to reveal the meanings of Lee-Sang"s short-stories through reconstructional approach and find relations with modernism or post-modernism. For this purpose, I analysed the modes of writing in Sang-Lee"s fictions relying on the theories of language and writing.
He pursued unconscious writing, that is, writing of inside driven by instints. These writings have some relations with dadaism or surrealism whose tendency his early poems showed. This kind of writing took the features of poetic world characterized by connotations and symbolism, and can be classified as "metaphoric writing". His works like Shilhwa, Donghae(童骸), Jido-? Amshil(地圖의 暗室), or Jijuhoishi(지주 會豕) demonstrate the mixture of literary methods like free-association, automatisme, inner-monologue that characterize unconscious writing. Most of the works that belong to unconscious writing are related with instincts like sexual instinct or death instinct. Repetition compulsion and erotic impulses Repetition compulsion and erotic impulses play on the works. On the other hand, by the game of language into meta-language, unconscious writing turns itself into "intertextual writing." the game-play of language is performed over these two fields of writing. These two modes of writing some times coincide in some tricks or errors in spelling.
Sang-Yi"s literature comprises a third moment which enables us to define the modernity of Korean literature. The aesthetic subject represented by Yi Sang appears as a negation of the patriot and the craftsman. With its practice of isolation and progress towards death, it negates the principle of self-preservation which is the basis of the patriot, and with its formalisation of self-concealment, it negates the principle of sincerity which is the foundation of the craftsman"s subjectivity. Writing as a game, armed with an awareness of pragmatics, is the product of an extreme artistic the craftsman it is a mode of reflective observation. By negating these two attitudes towards writing, the aesthetic subject symbolises the unlimited freedom to the artist as the original cosmopolitan form of modern subjectivity, and also offers a counterpart to the embodiment of corporality which writing itself achieves.
Consequently, writing a social and enlightenment practice, symbolised by the patriot, and writing as a search for individual reflection and sincerity, embodied in the craftsman, have been two grand central themes in the field of literature. The realm of the aesthetic subject could only remain peripheral and comparatively rare, but it still existed, as shown by Sang-Yi"s literature, and constitutes a clear point of reference for a discussion of the modernity of Korean literature. Since the 1990s in particular this modernism has been gradually expanding.
This dissertation discusses the internal motivations and necessities through which the consciousness of writing embodied in their narratives is cast into the form of a subjectivity. We defined these three subjectivities as that of the patriot, the craftsman and the aesthetic subject respectively, This dissertation thus represents and attempt to theorise the essence of the forces which have driven Korea"s modern fiction and, by doing so, to understand and explain more precisely the representative pathos of that fiction which has for too long been entangled in definitions of literary trends such as modernism.
