국문 초록

  2004년도 국회의원 선거에서 한국의 유권자들은 혼합형 선거구제에서 처음으로 지역구에서의 의원투표와 비례대표에서의 정당투표를 분할해서 투표할 수 있게 되었다. 설문조사에 의하면 한국인 유권자의 약 20%가 분할투표를 한 것으로 나타났다. 그렇다면, 왜 그리고 누가 분할투표를 하였는가? 분할투표의 요인은 무엇이었는가? 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 질문에 대한 답을 구하기 위하여 17대 총선을 중심으로 개인의 선거행태에 초점을 두고 분석하는 것이다. 서구에서의 분할투표에 관한 연구가 많이 있지만 여전히 공통요인에 대한 합의가 형성되어 있지 못하다. 이유는 분할투표의 요인이 나라에 따라 그리고 상황에 따라 다를 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 서구에서 검증된 여러 이론적 가설을 한국의 17대 총선에서 검증해보고자 한다. 이를 위한 자료는 17대 총선 이후에 실시된 설문조사를 이용하였다.
  본 연구에서의 결론은 당파심이 약하고 정부의 성과에 대한 불만족이 분할투표의 원인이며 또한 진보적인 이념을 가진 사람과 대학생들이 보다 많이 분할투표를 하는 경향이 있다는 것이다.

？？In the 2004 National Assembly election, Koreans were first given to cast one vote for a district representative and one vote for a party list under a mixed-member majoritarian system in over five decades. Survey data indicates that about 20 percent of Korean voters split their votes. Why and who did voters split their votes in South Korea? What are the sources of split ticket voting? Although many studies have examined the sources of split ticket voting mainly based on Western democracies, there is little consensus on what causes ticket splitting. It is because motivations for vote splitting vary depending on different contexts. The goal of this study is to find the main sources of split ticket voting in South Korea at the individual level. We test several competing theories of split ticket voting by using election survey data collected immediately after the April 2004 National Assembly election. The findings are that both weak partisanship and low satisfaction with government performance caused split ticket voting in South Korea. Progressives and university students are also more likely to split their votes.
