국문 초록

  인류는 여러 가지 목적을 가지고 오랫동안 벽화를 그려왔다. 벽화는 작품의 크기가 크고 실외에 전시할 수 있기 때문에 공공미술의 성격이 짙다. 이런 특징 때문에 벽화는 환경, 사회, 역사적인 주제와 관련지어 통합교육과정에 적용하거나 협동학습을 하기에 적합하다. 이 연구는 벽화가 가진 교육적 효과를 알아보고 학교, 지역사회 단체, 미술관 등에서 벽화 프로젝트를 진행하기 위해 필요한 정보를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 미국 인디애나 주 포트웨인의 포트웨인 미술관에서 2006년 여름부터 실시하고 있는 지역사회 벽화 프로젝트에 대해 연구했다. 우리는 지역사회 벽화 프로젝트를 통해 얻은 교육적 성과와 문제점, 문제점에 대한 대안을 모색하고 벽화 프로젝트를 적용할 수 있는 예에 대해 알아볼 것이다.

영문 초록

  Human beings have made murals for a long time to serve diverse purposes. Murals show a marked trend toward public art because they are usually big and can be exhibited outdoors. These characteristics of murals makes it appropriate to incorporate their study in an integrated curriculum related to environment, society, and history or cooperative learning. I researched the Community Mural Project produced by Fort Wayne Museum of Art at Fort Wayne, Indiana in the United States to examine its educational effects and to compile information that would be helpful for schools, community organizations, and museums interested in conducting similar mural projects. Children created murals during summer 2006 and spring 2007 with the assistance of Max Meyer, a museum educator and Jason Stopa, a student artist. At the time of this writing, in summer 2007. they were creating the third mural. Based on the mural created in summer 2006, I will describe the materials. processes, outcomes, problems, and alternative proposals for similar mural projects. This paper will also include useful information which may be used to produce a mural project such as places for purchasing materials, characteristics of materials, and prices. Through the Community Mural Project. children developed a sense of belonging, self-confidence. and a cooperative spirit. However, materials used for the project are expensive and custom-built production. Murals are powerful tools for enabling children to realize their power to change society and teaching them to speak up without resorting to violence. If the Community Mural Project utilized these inherent characteristics of murals. educators could provide children a platform for more meaningful learning. As Meyer and Stopa mentioned. one of the most powerful outcomes of the Community Mural Project is the development of mutual understanding between two groups from different social and economic backgrounds. Consequently. the mural project may be used as an effective means of improving social interaction among different social. cultural. and economic groups.
