석주명의 ‘제주도총서(濟州島叢書)’에 관한 연구

국문 초록

  나비박사로 알려진 석주명은 제주도에 관한 책 6권을 집필하였다. 총서 형태로 1947년부터 발간하기 시작한 이 책들 중 제1권 제주도방언(濟州島方言), 제2권 제주도 생명조사서(濟州島生命調査書), 제3권 제주도관계문헌집(濟州島關係文獻集은)은 석주명 생전에 서울신문사에서 출판되었다. 나머지 제4권 제주도수필(濟州島隨筆), 제5권 제주도곤충상(濟州島昆蟲相), 제6권 제주도자료집(濟州島資料鏶) 등은 석주명의 사후에 그의 동생 석주선에 의해 출판되었다. 본 논문에서는 석주명의 제주도 총서 6권이 갖는 출판학적 의미와 그의 제주도 연구가 ‘제주도학(濟州島學)’이라는 지역연구와 어떠한 연관성을 갖고 있는 지에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다.
  석주명의 제주도총서들은 문헌과 고증에 근거하여 제주도와 관련한 다방면의 자료를 수집하고 분류하여 놓은 책이다. 이 총서들을 보면 제주도에 관한 전반적인 지식을 얻을수가 있다. 석주명이 집대성한 제주도총서는 제주도학 연구의 시발점이 되는 원재료 공장의 역할을 톡톡히 하고 있고 앞으로도 하게 될 것이다. 그 이유는 석주명의 제주도 관련 연구 작업이 일회성, 일과성이 아니라 원대하게 기획되고 철저하게 준비된 출판행위였기 때문이다. 이 총서가 지니는 또 하나의 특징은 비교학적 의미를 가지면서도 결국은 제주도에 관한 통합학문적 자세를 취했다는 점이다.
  우리나라에서 지역연구라는 개념이 제대로 서지 않았던 1950년대 이전 상황에서, 석주명의 제주도 총서는 통합적 학문으로서의 지역학 즉 ‘제주도학’을 열었다고 할 수 있다. 석주명의 총서는 제주도학 연구를 위하여 이용의 편의성을 크게 확장하여 놓은 원재료임은 물론 제주도학의 전제(前提)이기도 했으며 자극으로서 작용하고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

  JuMyoung-Seok, known as "the Butterfly Expert," wrote six books about Jeju Island. Of these books that have been issued since 1947, Jeju Island Dialect Vol. 1, Jeju Island Life Research Vol. 2, and Jeju Island-related Literature Vol. 3 were published by Seoul Newspaper during his lifetime.
  The purpose of this study is to review the significance of the publication of a series of studies on Jeju Island and the relationship between the book author"s Jeju Island studies and local research. JuMyoung-Seok read every resource on Jeju Island and thoroughly collected it in the course of writing his Jeju Island series. Through this series, we can obtain a general knowledge of Jeju Island. The resources of this series can be appreciated in its bibliographical aspect, as each resource was excerpted based on literature and dealt with from a reasonable standpoint. Another characteristic of the series is that it is essentially a work of comparative literature, adopting the integrated academic position in the end. A look at the contents of this series indicates its consideration allowing us to get a wide knowledge of its field, as it provides collected and integrated resources pertaining to the same kind of knowledge regardless of any trace containing any resource.
  In addition, this series enables us to carry out comparative studies by arranging similarities or differences so that we can contrast them simultaneously. In the situation prior to 1950,when the concept of local research was not yet established in our country, a Jeju Island series by JuMyoung-Seok contributed to founding local studies into a single integrated body of knowledge now referred to as the "Jejudo Study."
