영문 초록

  This paper provides a description and evaluation of the so-called "John School Program(JS)" for the first-time pursuing prostitution offender. This alternative sentencing strategy is designed for the male clients of female prostitutes who have been charged with an offence of "Anti-prostitution Act(2004)." Upon entering a quilty plea, these men are diverted into a one-day educational program that focusses on the social harms caused by the sex-trade. After completing the JS, the original prostitution charge is withdrawn.
  Results from a pre-post program survey of JS(N=509) indicates that the program is somewhat successful in achieving some of its principal objectives. Our results indicates that the JS may be somewhat successful in achieving several of its principal objectives, however, that the impact of JS do not seem to translate into significant changes in self-anticipated furture prostitution-related behavior. While a significant proportion of sex-trade veterans state that they will continue to use prostitutes, this group also shows the greatest post-program change with respect to anticipated future behavior. Hence despite additional analyses which indicate that sex-trade veterans often adopt prostitution as part of their general lifestyle and develop elaborate justifications for their behavior, the JS diversion program may still be able to deter some of these individuals from participating in the sex-trade. By contrast, our analysis suggests that arrest alone may be enough to dissuade the less experienced Deniers and First-timers.
  The paper concludes with a suggestion of the recommendations for change to be effective for the JS model, discussing the potential benefits and problems associated with the JS practices.
