국문 초록

오늘날의 시대는 통합된 가치를 기반으로 통합된 서비스를 그 어떤 영역에도 구애받지 않고 제공받을 수 있는 이용자 중심 환경이라고 규정할 수 있다. 이에 따라 출판산업에서도 기존 산업과는 엄격히 구분되는 새로운 출판산업이 등장하고 있는데, 그것은 바로 '디지털출판산업'이다. 디지털출판산업은 디지털 융합화가 그러하듯, 출판제작 및 유통, 그리고 소비자 등에 이르기까지 그 영향을 끼치고 있으며, 그 핵심에는 e-book이 존재하고 있다. 즉, e-book은 기존의 종이책과는 다르게 다양한 유무선 네트워크를 기반으로 개인휴대단말기나 PDA, PC, 혹은 e-book 전용단말기를 통해 언제(anytime), 어디서나(anywhere) 서비스 받을 수 있는 디지털 콘텐츠인 것이다. 이에 따라, 본 연구에서는 오늘날의 출판환경을 디지털출판환경이라고 규정하고, 디지털출판환경에서 중추적인 서비스이자 콘텐츠로 작용할 e-book을 중심으로 하여 디지털출판의 동태성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 시스템다이내믹스(system dynamics)라는 연구방법을 적용하여 디지털출판산업의 e-book 동태성을 알아보았으며, 그에 따른 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, e-book은 일종의 디지털콘텐츠로써, 개인의 욕구에 기반 한 정보서비스이다. 그러므로 이용자(user)들이 이동하면서 간편하게 볼 수 있는 이동성과 휴대성이 보장된 단말기로 e-book을 다운받을 수 있도록 해야 한다. 그러나 유의할 것은 통합형 정보서비스단말기를 통해 e-book이 서비스되어야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 원인은 이용자들의 입장에서, 정보욕구를 소비하는 것에 대한 비용이 중요한 영향을 끼칠 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 e-book을 서비스하는 출판사들의 경우, "출판사-CP-네트워크(망)사업자"간의 협의나 유대관계가 매우 중요하다. 둘째, e-book 수요량이 e-book 출판사와 e-book 단말기제조업체 등에 영향을 끼쳐, 궁극적으로 e-book 시장의 포화상태와 불안정성을 증가시킬 수 있다. 결국, 적절한 수요량과 가격결정을 통해 e-book 시장이 급격하게 확장되는 것을 사전에 경계할 필요성이 있다. 즉, e-book 시장의 급격한 확장은 초기에는 긍정적 영향을 끼칠 수 있으나, 시간이 지날수록 e-book 가격 하락에 영향을 주어 자칫 e-book 전체시장에 부정적 영향을 끼칠 수 있다. 따라서 가장 중요한 핵심은 e-book 시장의 불안정성에 있으며, e-book 시장의 급격한 성장 및 형성을 어느 정도 제어할 필요성이 대두된다. 물론, 초기 e-book 서비스가 확대되기 위해서는 이용자들의 관심과 배려가 있어야 하는 것은 당연하지만, 지나친 e-book 사용자의 확대는 전체적인 e-book 시장구조의 포화상태로 이어지기 때문에 e-book 시장에 대한 적절한 진입규제가 다소간 필요할 것이다.

영문 초록

Like digital convergence, digital publishing industry influences publishing production and circulation and consumer as well, and e-book is at the core of this industry. e-book is different from paper book in that its digital contents can be used anytime and anywhere by using PCS, PDA, PC or e-book based on wire/wireless network. Therefore, this study defines today`s publishing environment as that of digital publishing and intends to review dynamics of digital publishing environment focusing on e-book which will function as central service and contents in publishing environment. To the end, this research adopts the methodology of system dynamics in reviewing the dynamics of e-book in digital publishing industry, which led to following conclusions. First, e-book, which is part of digital contents, is the information service based on personal needs. Therefore, it should be made possible for users to easily download e-book with their mobile and personal devices that they can use conveniently even while moving. The important point, however, is that e-book should be provided through integrated information service. This is because costs for the service can have much influence on consumers. For this reason, it is crucial for publishing companies to keep close consultation with CP and network companies. Second, demands for e-book can affect publishers and device-making companies and eventually increase saturation and instability of e-book markets. Thus, the rapid expansion of e-book markets should be prevented through proper controlling of demands and pricing. The rapid expansion of e-book markets can have positive influence at the initial stage, but it can negatively affect whole e-book markets by lowering prices of e-book. The key point lies on the instability of e-book markets and it is necessary to control the rapid growth and formation of e-book markets. Though users' attention will be necessary for the expansion of e-book service, proper control on inroads into e-book markets are needed because the increase in the number of e-book uses can result in saturation of overall e-book markets.
