Since the collapse of the Baekje Dynasty, most of the brilliant and glorious cultural heritage sites of Buyeo have disappeared, and today, only the vestiges of them remain in the scenic features of Buyeo's Palgyeong (eight scenic places), such as Nakhwaam, Goransa temple, and Jaondae. Poets of the time selected some sights as Buyeo's Palgyeong, and reflected their emotions onto them as poetic images. Palgyeong has been selected several times over: The Buyeo areawas selected as the Subukjeongpalgyeong of Sangchon, Sin Heum, and the Buyeohoegopalyeong of Kim Honguk. Before these, there had been the old and previous Palgyeongs, which were allegedly the sources of the Sin's and Kim's. In the second half of the reignof King Youngjo, the later Palgyeong was selected, and the new Palgyeong was chosen in 1920. This is because Buyeo has beautiful scenery and historicity as the ancient capital of the Baekje Dynasty. Whenever the Palgyeong of Buyeo was selected, each different sight and scenic feature was chosen. In the old, the previous, and the later Palgyeongs and the Buyeohoegopalyeong, the Palgyeong were called only by their area names. In the Subukjeongpalgyeong and the new Palgyeong, on the other hand, the sights were named by mixing their names and their scenic characteristics. Numerous poets, such as Lee Gok of the Goryeo Dynasty, ceaselessly make Buyeo's Palgyeongs into poetic figures. These poets recall the historical facts through the Palgyeong and recognize the contrast between [the] changeable life and [the] consistent nature as time goes by. They put the emotion, the transience, which is aroused in the process of recalling, into their poems. With the seasonal and timely background of the evening and the late fall, transience stirs up other emotions, such as solitude, sorrow, anxiety, and lamentations through poetic words: 'wild and lonely fortress,' 'the patter of raindrops,' 'the sound of drums at sunset,' and 'the songs of the fishermen.' Although the collapse of the Baekje Dynasty might have been inevitable, the Sillaites tried to justify that it was the right thing for Silla to conquer Baekje. The remaining people of the Baekje, however, lamented their country's downfall, criticized King Uija, the last king of the Baekje, for his misgovernment, while mourning for the loyal subjects, such as Seong Chung and Heung Su. Furthermore, they changed the shame of the Baekje Dynasty into their own and tried to vent their indignation through their poetry. Most of the Buyeo's Palgyeong have tales related to its scenic features. There are some who admit the truth of the contents of the tales, customarily use them to find the circumstantial evidence of what happened during that and arouse the emotion of the present. But others do not admit the tales as facts and consider them fictional outcomes used to show the treacherous subjects, King Uija's misgovernment and his wallowing in sensual pleasure, and Sojeongbang's heroism and mystification.
