국문 초록

본 연구는 두 가지 목적을 가지고 있다. 첫째, 내외통제성(perceived control)과 학업 성취의 종단적 관련성을 알아보는 것이다. 두 변인 사이의 관련성은 여러 연구에서 지지되어 왔다. 그러나, 대부분의 연구가 횡단연구 그리고 작은 표본크기 문제점을 지니고 있으므로 그 한계로 인해 두 변인 사이의 장시간에 걸친 관련성을 파악하기 어려웠다. 이 연구에서는 최신 종단연구 방법인 잠재성장 모형(latent growth model)을 미국의 National Education Longitudinal Study 자료에 적용하여 두 변인의 변화에 있어서의 관련성을 통계적으로 검증하였다. 결과에 의하면 청소년기에 내외 통제성은 선형으로 감소하며 학업 성취는 선형으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 두 변인의 변화에 있어서 정적 관련성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구의 두 번째 목적은 고차 (higher-order) 잠재성장 모형을 소개하여 교육학과 심리학 분야에 많이 응용되도록 하는 것이다. 이 방법의 가장 큰 장점은 측정오차를 통제한 상태에서 진정한 변화를 알아볼 수 있고, 변화하는 것이 개념을 측정하는 도구가 아닌 우리가 알아보고자 하는 개념 그 자체라는 것을 확인해 볼 수 있다는 점이다.

영문 초록

Perceived control has long been known as an important predictor of academic achievement as well as intellectual ability. But despite its theoretical and practical importance, most research on perceived control has limitations to show its dynamic interplay with students academic achievement. Most previous research has applied cross-sectional data analysis to relatively small samples. To get a whole picture of the relationship between perceived control and academic achievement, we analyzed latent growth models using a nationally represented sample (NELS: 88). Two univaiate LGMs were run to study the growth pattern of perceived control and academic achievement. In contrast to previous findings, perceived control turned out to be slightly decreasing during adolescence. Concerning academic achievement, our study shows that academic achievement was growing linearly during the adolescent period. Finally, multivariate LGM was performed to examine the longitudinal relationship between perceived control and academic achievement. Multivariate LGM results show that the relationship between initial status (at eighth grade) of perceived control and that of academic achievement has shown significant correlation. Concerning the rate of change over time (during the period from 8th grade to 12th grade), perceived control and academic achievement also showed positive correlation.
