국문 초록

홍대용(洪大容, 1731-1783)은 조선시대 북학파의 핵심 인물로, 철학, 문학, 군사, 수학, 음악, 생태학 등 다양한 분야에서 학문적 업적을 남긴 다재다능한 인물로 주목받고 있다. 그는 당시 조선의 학문적·사상적 한계를 극복하고 새로운 지식을 수용하려는 북학파의 중심에서 중요한 역할을 했다. 지금까지 그의 철학과 과학적 사상에대한 연구는 활발히 이루어졌지만, 문학가로서의 면모와 문학 작품에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. 특히 그의 문학 작품이 보여주는 창작의 독창성과 사상적전환은 더욱 심층적인 고찰이 필요하다. 본 논문은 조선시대 북학파 문인 홍대용의 문학작품인 <보령소년사>를 중심으로 그의 문학적 성과와 중국문학에 대한 수용 양상을 고찰하였다. 연구는 크게 두 가지 측면에서 진행되었다. 첫째, 텍스트 분석을 통해 <보령소년사>가 도연명의 <도화원기>와 한유의 <마설> 등 다양한 중국 고전 문학의 영향을 받으면서도 독창적인 문체와 주제를 보여준다는 점을 밝혔다. <보령소년사>는 이러한 영향을 기반으로 당대 현실과 이상 세계를 조화롭게 융합하며 독자적인 문학적 색채를 형성하고 있다. 둘째, 이 작품에 등장하는 소년의 형상을 중심으로 홍대용의 사상적 변화와 성격적 전환을 분석하였다. 소년은 이상적 인간형으로 설정되었으며, 이를 통해 홍대용은 이상 사회에 대한 자신의 사상을 반영하고, 동시에 전통적인 질서와 새로운 가치관 사이에서 갈등하는 자신의 내적 고민을 드러낸다. 특히 작품에 나타나는 소년의 행동과 상징은 홍대용 개인의 사상적 발전 과정과도 깊은 연관이 있다. 이는 당시 조선 후기 사회의 변화와 지식인들의 성격적·사상적 전환을 이해하는 데 중요한 단서를 제공한다.

영문 초록

Hong Dae-yong (1731–1783), a prominent figure of the Northern Learning movement during the Joseon Dynasty, was a polymath who made significant contributions across diverse fields such as philosophy, literature, military studies, mathematics, music, and ecology. While his philosophical and scientific ideas have been extensively studied, his contributions as a literary figure remain relatively underexplored. Particularly, his literary works, exemplified by their originality and ideological transformation, require deeper academic attention. This paper focuses on Hong Dae-yong’s literary work Boryeong Sonyeonsa (The Story of the Young Man of Boryeong) and examines how the work reflects his literary achievements and acceptance of Chinese literary traditions. The study pursues two main objectives: First, through a textual analysis, the paper demonstrates that Boryeong Sonyeonsa draws inspiration from various Chinese classical literary works such as Tao Yuanming’s Peach Blossom Spring and Han Yu’s Disquisition on Ma (Mashe). Despite these influences, Hong’s work reveals a distinctive style and original themes. It harmonizes contemporary realities with utopian ideals, thereby crafting a unique literary identity. Second, this paper explores the characterization of the young protagonist in Boryeong Sonyeonsa as a "knight-errant", analyzing how this portrayal reflects Hong’s ideological transformation and inner struggles. The young man symbolizes an ideal figure embodying Hong’s aspirations for an equitable society while exposing his internal conflicts amidst traditional values and emerging ideologies. The young man’s actions and symbolism are deeply intertwined with Hong’s philosophical journey, reflecting his intellectual development and the broader socio-political transitions of late Joseon society. Ultimately, Boryeong Sonyeonsa is not merely a product of imagination but a significant text mirroring the ideological and literary shifts of its time. By challenging Confucian orthodoxy, incorporating non-traditional values, and experimenting with novel literary genres, Hong Dae-yong carved a unique niche in the literary landscape of late Joseon Korea. This work provides valuable insights into the intellectual transitions of Joseon literati and warrants further investigation into its literary and philosophical implications.
