국문 초록

본 본문에서 분석하는 수인스님은 일제강점기에서부터 산업화 시기까지 다양한 활동을 하였고, 큰 성과를 거두었다. 특히 운문사를 정화하고, 중찰불사를 통해 비구니 대가람의 기틀을 마련한 공로가 있다. 이러한 성과는 대립과 투쟁, 폭력이 압도했던 시절에 화합과 자비, 상생이라는 불교의 가치를 통해 사찰을 정화했다는 점에서 새롭게 의미를 부여하고 논의해야 하는 활동이다. 그럼에도 수인스님에 대한 연구는 부족하며, 학계에서도 크게 주목하고 있지 않다. 본 논문은 수인스님의 수행, 사상 그리고 실천을 체계적으로 분석하여 그 본질과 의의를 탐구하는 것이 목적이다. 첫째, 스님에게 수행은 종교지도자라는 공인의 삶을 굳건하게 버티는 토대였다. 스님 자신도 투철하게 수행하였고, 제자들과 불자들에게 신심을 다해 성실하게 수행할 것을 제안하였다. 둘째, 스님의 사상은 무욕과 정진행으로 정리할 수 있다. 스님은 언제나 무욕과 무상의 삶을 살았고, 이는 인욕과 자비로 삶에서 구현되었다. 또한 스님은 출가수행자라는 자신의 본분(本分)과 본심(本心)에 최선을 다했다. 셋째, 스님의 실천은 사찰안에만 머물지 않고, 세상을 향하였다. 스님은 모든 생명이 평등하다는 원칙을 강조하며, 모든 사람을 위해 자비행을 추구하였다. 이처럼 수인스님의 수행, 사상, 실천을 종합적으로 분석하여, 우리는 수인스님의 가르침이 오늘날 한국사회와 한국불교가 처한 다양한 문제를 해결하는 데 기여할 수 있는 잠재력을 지니고 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the diverse activities and significant achievements of Bhikkhuni Sooin, spanning from the Japanese colonial period to the industrialization era. In particular, she contributed to laying the foundation for the Bhikkhuni great temple through the purification and rebuilding of Unmun-sa. Additionally, her achieve-ments are especially meaningful and deserving of discussion because they purified temples through Buddhist values of harmony, mercy, and coexistence during times when confrontation, struggle, and violence were prevalent. Despite these contributions, research on Bhikkhuni Sooin remains limited, and she has not received substantial attention in academic circles. This paper aims to systematically analyze Bhikkhuni Sooin's practice, thought, and social engagements to explore their essence and significance. Firstly, for Bhikkhuni Sooin, practice was the foundation that supported her public life as a religious leader. She was deeply dedicated to her own practice and earnestly encouraged her disciples and followers to engage in sincere and diligent practice. Secondly, her thought can be summarized by the principles of desirelessness [無欲] and diligent practice [精進行]. She lived a life characterized by desirelessness and impermanence, which manifested in her patience and compassion. She devoted herself fully to her fundamental role and original mind as a monastic practitioner. Thirdly, Master Sooin's actions extended beyond the confines of the temple to embrace the wider world. She emphasized the principle of equality of all life and pursued compassionate actions for the benefit of all people. By comprehensively analyzing her practice, thought, and social engagements, we confirm that her teachings possess the potential to contribute to resolving various issues faced by contemporary Korean society and Buddhism. This study highlights the enduring relevance and significance of Bhikkhuni Sooin's teachings in addressing the challenges of today.
