국문 초록

본 논문은 한국불교의 대표적인 선사인 고우스님의 생애와 선사 상을 주제로 하는 최초의 학술연구이다. 연구를 위해 스님의 법문 과 인터뷰 등 다양한 자료를 수집하여 정리하고 분석하였다. 한국 사회에 2000년대 이후 명상 붐이 일었고, 많은 사람들이 다양한 목적으로 명상을 실천하고 있다. 이러한 흐름에서 불교 수행법에 대한 관심도 증가하였지만 그 관심은 제한적이다. 불교 수행법, 대표적으로 간화선은 어려운 수행법이라는 선입견을 극복하지 못 하고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 고우스님은 간화선 수행과 보급, 선사 상 정립에 일평생을 바쳤다. 나아가 스님은 현대산업문명에서 비 롯된 문제들을 해결하는 데에 선이 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것이 라 주장하였다. 선은 개인적 차원에서 마음의 문제를 다루며, 동시 에 사회와 문명의 차원에서 인류가 나아가야 할 새로운 방향을 모색할 수 있기 때문이다. 이러한 측면에서 본 연구에서는 고우스 님의 선사상을 ① 직접성, ② 실천성, ③ 사회성으로 정리하였다. 첫째, 직접성은 선수행은 본래자리를 직접 향하고 있음을 의미한 다. 이 특성은 한국불교의 오래된 ‘본래부처’에 기초한다. 스님은 모든 인간은 본래 깨달음이 완성되어 있는데, 그것을 알지 못하고 착각에 빠져서 깨닫지 못할 뿐이라고 설명한다. 그래서 스님은 선 수행의 준비 요소로서 신심과 발심, 정견을 강조한다. 둘째, 실천성 은 선이 실천까지를 포함하고 있다는 점이다. 선은 그 자체가 목적 이 아니라, 선을 통한 ‘실천’ 즉, 지혜와 평화의 길을 따르는 것이라 고 설명한다. 셋째, 사회성은 선의 역할이 인류가 처한 위기 극복을 지향하며, 이러한 의미에서 선은 문명사적 대안이라는 의미규정과 통한다. 그래서 스님은 선수행을 통해 획득한 지혜는 남과 나를 넘어 사회와 인류를 향해야 한다고 주장한다. 한국불교에 대한 스 님의 비판도 이 부분에 집중되었다. 한국불교의 교리는 깊고 선수 행 전통은 뛰어나지만, 그 내용과 실천이 일치하지 않음을 안타까 워 하였다.

영문 초록

This paper is the first academic study to focus on the biography and Seon [禪] thoughts of Ven. Go-woo, a representative of Seon master of Korean Buddhism. For this study, I collected, organized, and analyzed various materials, including the monk's sermons and interviews. There has been a meditation boom in Korean society since the 2000s, and many people are practicing meditation for various purposes. Along with this trend, interest in Buddhist practices has also increased, but interest is limited. Buddhist practices, most notably Ganhwa Seon, have not been able to overcome the preconceived notion that it is difficult. Against this backdrop, Ven. Go-Woo has devoted his life to practicing and disseminating Ganhwa Seon and establishing Seon's thoughts. Furthermore, he argued that Seon can play an important role in solving the problems caused by modern industrial civilization. Seon can address issues of the mind on an individual level and, at the same time, explore new directions for humanity on a social and civilizational level. In this regard, this study summarizes his thoughts on (1) directness, (2) practicality, and (3) sociality. First, directness refers to Seon's practice being directed toward its original place. This characteristic is based on the long-standing Korean Buddhist concept of 'originally the Buddha.' He explained that all humans are inherently enlightened; they just do not know it and are mired in illusion. Therefore, he emphasizes faithfulness[信心], initiation of the spirit of enlightenment[發心], and right view[正見] as preparation for Seon’s practice. Second, practicality is that Seon includes practice. He explained that Seon is not a purpose in itself but rather the "practice" of Seon or following the path of wisdom and peace. Third, sociality explains that the role of Seon is to overcome the crises facing humanity; in this sense, Seon is a civilizational alternative. Thus, he argued that the wisdom acquired through the practice of Seon should be directed toward society and humanity, beyond others and oneself. His criticism of Korean Buddhism also centers on this point. Although Korean Buddhism's doctrine is profound and its athletic tradition is outstanding, he lamented that its content and practice are inconsistent.
