승가 및 한국불교의 미래에 관한 재가불자들의 인식 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 불교의 위기 극복을 위해 승가의 이미지 제고와 불교 계의 정책적 노력이 필요하다는 문제의식 속에서 재가불자들이 승가와 불교계를 어떻게 생각하고 있는지를 확인하고자 하였다. 구체적으로는 승가의 이미지와 불교계의 주요 과제들에 대한 재 가불자들의 현재 인식을 파악하고, 이 과정에서 드러난 주요 특성 들과 관련한 논의를 통해 향후 과제를 도출하고자 하였다. 이 연구는 2022년 3월부터 1개월간 중앙승가대학교 불교사회과 학연구소에서 진행한 ‘종단의 미래 설계를 위한 신도 여론 설문조 사’(이하 ‘신도 여론조사’)에서 수집된 자료 분석에 토대를 두고 있다. 신도 여론조사는 핵심 신도층을 대상으로 구글 폼을 이용한 온라인 설문조사 방식으로 진행하였다. 분석에 사용된 응답자는 모두 1,527명이었고, 통계프로그램인 ‘SPSS 21’을 이용해 빈도분 석과 상관관계 분석을 실시하였다. 주요 결과들은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재가불자들은 승가의 이미지 를 긍정적으로 평가하였다. 다만 조사 대상이 핵심 신도들이었다 는 점에서 긍정성의 정도가 높은 편이라고 보기는 어려울 것 같다. 둘째, 스님들의 사회적 활동에 대해 찬성하는 응답자들이 반대하 는 응답자들보다 현저히 많았고, 지역사회 내에서 스님의 공적 역할에 대해서는 더 적극적인 대처가 필요해 보인다. 셋째, 승가 공동체의 청정성 회복이 불교계의 중요한 과제이며, 지계와 수행 을 중심으로 청정성 회복을 위한 노력이 전개될 필요가 있음을 확인하였다. 넷째, 스님이 수행하는 여러 역할 가운데에서 자비 정신의 구현, 교학적 지식의 깊은 이해, 지계를 통한 청정한 생활 의 중요성에 대다수 응답자가 동의하는 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 신도 수 감소의 원인으로는 종교에 대한 무관심, 불교계의 각종 추문, 포교 부재 등이 주로 지적되었고, 대응 방안으로는 실생활에 유용한 프로그램의 운영과 불교의 현대화 등이 주로 언급되었다. 그리고 신도 감소의 원인과 대응 방안 사이의 정합성이 약하다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 여섯째, 교리의 재해석과 수행법의 재정립 을 통한 불교의 현대화가 필요하다. 일곱째, 생명 존중, 사회적 갈등 해소, 차별 및 혐오 금지 등에 대한 종책적 개입의 필요성이 높게 나타났다. 여덟째, 마음의 평화와 안정, 자비 실천, 생명 존중 등이 미래 한국불교의 중요한 과제가 될 것이고, 전통적인 제의적 성격의 과제는 중요성이 낮게 평가되었다. 이런 결과를 토대로 첫째, 실효성이 있는 승가의 이미지 제고 방안을 마련해 체계적이고 지속적으로 추진할 필요가 있음을 논 의하였다. 이와 관련해 승려상에 대한 체계적이고 종합적인 기초 연구가 선행되어야 하고, 승려다움의 재정립과 스님들의 선한 영 향력을 확산할 수 있는 적극적인 사회활동을 통해서 이미지를 제 고하는 방법을 논의하였다. 둘째, 이러한 활동의 기저에 지계와 수행, 마음의 평안과 자비 실천이라는 불교의 핵심 가치가 자리해 야 함을 주장하였다. 마지막으로 불교계가 처한 현실 진단과 대안 모색에 과학적 방법을 적용할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to find out how lay Buddhists perceive the Sangha and Buddhism in the context of the need to improve the image of the Sangha and the Korean Buddhist community's policy efforts to overcome the crisis. Specifically, this study aims to find out the current perceptions of lay Buddhists about the image of the Sangha and the main challenges of the Korean Buddhism, and to draw out future challenges through a discussion of the main characteristics that were discovered in the process. This study is based on the analysis of data collected in the “Buddhist Public Opinion Survey for the Future Design of the Buddhist Order”, which was conducted by the Institute of Buddhist Social Sciences at Joong-Ang Sangha University for one month from March 2022. The survey was conducted online using Google Forms among core lay Buddhist members. A total of 1,527 respondents were used in the analysis, and frequency and correlation analyses were conducted using the statistical program SPSS 21. The main findings are as follows: First, respondents rated the image of the Sangha positively. However, it is difficult to say that the level of positivity is high because the survey was conducted among core believers. Second, respondents who approved of the social activities of monks significantly outnumbered those who disapproved, and the public role of monks in the community needs to be addressed more proactively. Third, we found that restoring the purity of the sangha community is an important issue for the Buddhist community, and that efforts to restore purity need to be centered on precept observance and practice. Fourth, among the many roles that monks play, the majority of respondents agree on the importance of embodying a spirit of compassion, deep understanding of doctrinal knowledge, and living a clean life through observance of the precepts. Fifth, disinterest in religion, various scandals in the Buddhist community, and lack of propagation were mainly cited as reasons for the decline in the Buddhist population, and the operation of useful programs for daily life and modernization of Buddhism were mainly cited as solutions. It can be seen that there is a weak alignment between the causes of the decline in Buddhist population and the solutions. Sixth, Buddhism needs to be modernized by reinterpreting its doctrines and redefining its practices. Seventh, there is a high need for Buddhist intervention in respecting life, resolving social conflicts, and prohibiting discrimination and hatred. Eighth, peace of mind and stability, practicing compassion, and respect for life are important tasks for the future of Korean Buddhism, while traditional ritualistic tasks were rated as less important. Based on these results, it was discussed that, first, there is a need to systematically and continuously promote the image of the Sangha through effective plans. In this regard, systematic and comprehensive basic research on monks should be conducted first, and redefining monkhood as a way to enhance the image of the Sangha. We reviewed active social activities that can spread the good influence of monks. Second, he argued that the core Buddhist values of observance of the precepts, practice, peace of mind, and compassion should be the foundation of these activities. Finally, it was suggested that the scientific method should be applied to diagnose the current situation of the Buddhist community and find alternatives.
