국문 초록

과학은 관찰과 실험을 통해 증명이 된 지식만을 다루는 것으로 여겨져서 다문화 인식이나 태도 등을 기를 수 없는 영역과도 같아 보인다. 하지만 Banks(2008)는 과학 교과에 있어 신체적 특징을 활용하면 다문화적 내용요소를 포함시킬 수 있음을 주장하였다. 이에 본 연구는 STS(Science-Technology-Society)를 활용한 다문화교육 프로그램이 초등학생의 다문화 인식을 변화시키는지 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 초등학교 6학년 2학기 과학 중 ‘우리 몸의 구조와 기능’ 단원을 다문화교육 프로그램으로 재구성하고자 한다. 연구의 대상은 경기도 소재 S초등학교 6학년 한 개 학급으로 구성된 25명이며, 본 연구를 위해 STS를 활용한 다문화교육 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하였다. 분석방법은 연구 참여자와의 면담, 수업 소감문, 학습지의 분석을 통해 연구 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 프로그램 실행 전과 초기에는 학생들이 다문화 사회와 다문화 가정에 대해 고정관념과 거부감, 무관심 등의 태도를 보였다. 프로그램을 진행하는 중기 과정에서 기존에 자신이 가지고 있는 관점에서 벗어나 다양한 관점으로 다른 문화를 바라보고 다양성을 존중하는 태도를 보였다. 또한 주변에서 볼 수 있는 과학과 관련된 기술적, 사회적 문제들을 인식하고 문제 해결의 필요성을 느끼기 시작하였다. 프로그램을 진행하는 후기 과정에서 학생들은 과학적 지식과 함께 문제 해결 방법을 탐색해보고 성장한 다문화 인식 수준을 바탕으로 책임 있는 의사결정을 내리는 태도를 갖추어나가게 되었다. 본 연구 결과는 다문화교육이 과학 교과와도 연계하여 이루어질 수 있으며, 과학뿐만 아니라 타 교과 교육과정 및 창의적 체험활동과의 통합·연계를 통해 다문화교육이 이루어져야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Science is considered to deal only with knowledge that has been proven through observation and experiment, so it seems like an area in which multicultural awareness or attitudes cannot be developed. However, Banks(2008) suggests that using physical characteristics in science subjects can include elements of multicultural content. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to determine whether a multicultural education program using STS(Science-Technology-Society) changes elementary school students' multicultural awareness. To this end, this study seeks to reorganize the ‘Structure and Function of Our Body’ section of science in the second semester of sixth grade elementary school into a multicultural education program. The subjects of the study were 25 students from one 6th grade class at S Elementary School in Gyeonggi-do, and for this study, a multicultural education program using STS was designed and applied. The analysis method was to collect and analyze research data through interviews with research participants, class impressions, and analysis of worksheets. The results of this study are as follows. Before and at the beginning of the program, students showed stereotypes, resistance, and indifference toward multicultural society and multicultural families. During the mid-term of the program, they broke away from their existing perspectives and showed an attitude of respecting diversity by looking at other cultures from different perspectives. In addition, students began to recognize technological and social problems related to science that they could see around them and felt the need to solve them. In the later stages of the program, students explored problem-solving methods along with scientific knowledge and developed an attitude toward making responsible decisions based on their developed level of multicultural awareness. The results of this study suggest that multicultural education can be achieved in connection with science subjects, and that multicultural education should be achieved through integration and connection not only with science but also with other subject curriculum and creative experiential activities.
