국문 초록

또래관계는 청소년들의 사회ㆍ심리적 성장과 발달에 중요한 영향을 미친다. 본 연구는 다문화 청소년들 간의 또래관계 경험 및 특성에 대한 이해를 심화하고자 서울시에 위치한 다문화 대안 중학교에 재학 중인 33명(남학생 17명)의 다문화 학생들의 또래집단 내 상호작용을 면밀하게 탐색하였다. 연구에 참여한 학생들은 평균 15.5세(최소 14세, 최대 17세)였으며 부모 중 한쪽의 국적이 중국, 우즈베키스탄을 비롯하여 모두 10개국에 분포하는 것으로 나타났다. 연구방법으로는 연구자가 2013년부터 2년에 걸쳐 해당 학교에서 교사로 재직하면서 참여 관찰을 수행하는 문화기술지 방법이 활용되었으며 주로 관찰과 면담 기록을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 자료 분석 결과, 다문화 청소년들의 또래관계는 다음과 같은 특징을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 첫째, 다문화 학생들은 또래에게 접근하고 또래관계를 유지하기 위하여 주로 비(非)언어적 전략을 사용하였다. 둘째, 또래에 대한 놀림과 괴롭힘도 빈번히 발견되었는데, 여기에는 부정적인 측면뿐만 아니라 상대의 관심을 끌기 위한 의도도 포함되어 있다. 셋째, 이 학생들은 또래 선호도를 결정짓는 결정적인 요인으로 성격을 꼽았다. 넷째, 이 학생들은 또래의 다양성에 관대하며 각자의 특색을 수용하는 경향이 강했다. 이런 결과를 바탕으로 다문화 학생을 지도하는 교사들이 참고할 수 있는 교육적 제언 및 생활지도 방안들이 언급되었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences and characteristics of peer relationships in the context of multicultural classroom. The participants of this study were 33 adolescents (17 boys) enrolled at one of the alternative multicultural schools located at Seoul, Korea. The students were 15.5 years old in average (14-17 years old); and the nationalities of one of their parents represented 10 different countries. Data were collected through 2 years of ethnography study in which the first author played the role of a drama teacher while conducting the research by means of observation and interviews with the students and teachers as well. Four themes emerged with regard to the characteristics of peer relationships among multiculural adolescents. First, the majority of the students regarded a kind of ‘body language’ as a main strategy to approach their peers and maintain the relationships afterwards. Second, teasing or verbal harrassment were observed targeting a specific student; but those behaviors also played the role of showing a personal interest in peers. Third, personality characteristics were counted as a critical factor determining preferences among the students. Forth, the students were used to cultural differences among themselves, tending to accept their peers as they were. In concluding, we made discussions and suggestions which may help teachers concerning students from a variety of cultural backgrounds in guiding them to form and maintain healthy peer relationships among themselves.
