역경극복학생의 학교생활 특성 분석: PISA 2012 자료를 바탕으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 학생의 학업성취를 예측하는 주요한 변인인 가정의 사회경제적 지위가 낮음에도 불구하고 높은 학업성취를 보이는 학생들과 관련 있는 학교생활 특성을 파악하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 OECD에서 만 15세 학생의 읽기·수학·과학 소양(literacy)을 평가하는 학업성취도 국제비교연구(PISA)의 2012년 자료 중 한국 학생들의 수학 성취점수와 경제 및 사회문화적 지위(ESCS) 지수를 활용하여 역경극복학생과 취약계층 저성취 학생 집단을 구분하고 학교생활 특성 변인들과의 관계를 일반화위계선형모형(HGLM)으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 역경극복학생이 취약계층 저성취 학생에 비해 학교에서의 학습활동에 대해 긍정적으로 인식하고 있으며 학교 내에서 긍정적인 사회적 관계를 맺고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 가정의 사회경제적 배경이 학생의 학업성취에 미치는 영향과 그로 인한 사회계층 간 교육격차를 축소하기 위한 방안을 모색하는 데 실제적인 단서를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This paper conducted an empirical study focusing on 15-year-old students using Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 data. In particular, the study first classified students into two groups based on Index of economic, social and cultural status (ESCS) in PISA 2012: 1) resilient students defined as students who succeeded at school(the top quarter of PISA 2012 mathematics score) despite a disadvantaged family background(the bottom 25% of ESCS); 2) at-risk students with the same disadvantageous family background who under-performed at school(the bottom quarter of PISA 2012 mathematics score). Next, the study examined which school life characteristics were more likely to differentiate these two student groups using hierarchical generalized linear model (HGLM) analysis. The major findings can be summarized as follows: First, in comparison with at-risk students, resilient students were more likely to perceive that schooling is valuable or useful. Second, the scores of “sense of belonging to school” for resilient students were significantly higher compared to those for at-risk students. These findings can be used as a useful evidence in developing educational policies and school reforming strategies for students from disadvantaged family background.
