국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 어머니의 정서표현 양가성과 유아의 또래유능성 간의 관계에서 유아의 정서조절능력의 매개 효과를 검증하는 것이었다. 이를 위해 J지역 J시와 W군의 어린이집 및 유치원에 다니는 만 3-5세 유아(남 147명, 여 168명)의 어머니 315명과 유아가 다니는 기관의 담임교사 24명을 대상으로 어머니 보고를 통하여 어머니의 정서표현 양가성과 유아의 정서조절능력을, 유아의 담임교사 보고를 통해서 유아의 또래유능성을 측정하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어머니의 정서표현 양가성과 정서조절능력 간에, 그리고 어머니의 정서표현 양가성과 유아의 또래유능성 간에 부적 상관이 있었다. 둘째, 어머니의 정서표현 양가성은 직접적으로 유아의 또래유능성을 낮출 뿐 아니라 유아의 정서조절 능력을 약화시킴으로써 또래유능성을 낮추는 것으로 확인되었다. 즉 유아의 정서조절은 어머니의 정서표현 양가성과 유아의 또래유능성 간의 관계에서 부분매개 효과가 있었다. 이는 유아기 또래유능성을 향상시키기 위해서는 유아의 정서조절을 향상시키려는 노력 뿐만 아니라 양육자의 정서표현 양가성에 대한 개입도 필요함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of children’s emotional regulation between mothers’ emotional ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and peer competence during early childhood. A total of 315 mothers of preschoolers (3-5 years; 147 males, 168 females) completed questionnaires including ambivalence over emotional expressiveness (AEQ) and their children’s emotional regulation (ERC). Also, 24 teachers at childcare centers and kindergartens completed peer competence of preschoolers. Results of the study are as follows. First, mother’s ambivalence over emotional expressiveness was negatively correlated with chidlren’s emotional regulation. However, children’s emotional regulation was positively correlated with peer competence. Second, mothers’ ambivalence over emotional expressiveness had statistically significant effects both on emotional regulation and on peer competence of preschoolers. Also, children’s emotional regulation had a partial mediating effect. Mothers who experienced ambivalence over emotional expressiveness tended to be less affectionate and their children tended to have lower peer competence, suggesting that children’s emotional regulation mediates between mother’s ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and their children’s peer competence. Study implications and limitations are discussed.
