국문 초록

이 연구는 한국어에서 죽음의 은유적 개념화가 어떤 양상으로 나타나는가를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있었다. 이에 이 연구에서 밝힌 내용을 정리하면 구조적 은유에서는 죽음을 상거래, 여행, 식물, 임산부 또는 산모, 수확하는 사람, 매듭, 잠, 안식으로 이해하고 있었다. 지향적 은유에서는 죽음을 아래와 불 꺼짐 또는 어둠으로 이해하며, 존재론적 은유에서는 개체와 손님으로 이해하고 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 죽음을 ‘상거래, 식물, 임산부 또는 산모, 수확하는 사람, 매듭, 개체, 손님’으로 이해하는 것을 새로이 밝혀낼 수 있었다. 특히 우리가 죽음을 상거래나 개체, 손님으로 이해한다는 것은 죽음에 대한 최근 우리의 인식 변화 곧 자본으로서의 죽음과 웰빙(well-being)에서 웰다잉(well dying)으로의 전환을 모색하는 사회적 분위기를 설명해 준다. 또한 죽음을 ‘식물, 임산부 또는 산모, 수확하는 사람, 매듭’으로 이해하는 것은 죽음에 대한 책임과 해결책이 전적으로 개인에게만 있지 않고 사회에도 일부 있음을 보여주는 근거가 된다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine how the metaphorical conceptualization of death appears in Korean. Therefore, in the structural metaphor, death was understood as commerce, travel, plants, pregnant women or mothers, harvesters, knots, sleep, and rest. In the orientational metaphor, death was understood as below, light off, or darkness, and in the ontological metaphor, it was understood as entities and guests. Through this study, it was possible to newly discover understanding death as commerce, plants, pregnant women or mothers, harvesting people, knots, individuals, and customers . In particular, the fact that we understand death as a commercial transaction, entity, or guest explains the recent change in our perception of death, that is, the social atmosphere seeking a transition from well-being to well-dying as capital. In addition, understanding death as a plant, pregnant woman, mother, harvesting person, knot can be said to be the basis for showing that the responsibility and solution for death are not entirely for individuals, but also for some in society.
