국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 가톨릭 대학의 정체성을 제고하는 데 있다. 오늘날 한국의 가톨릭계 대학들은 교육의 효과성, 연구의 수월성, 경영의 효율성 등에서 다른 대학들과 치열한 경쟁을 하며 우월한 지위를 담보하는 목표 외에 ‘가톨릭’ 정체성을 보존하고 증진시킬 책무를 지니고 있다. 교황 요한바오로 2세의 헌장인 가톨릭대학교를 위한 교황령(Ex Corde Ecclesiae) 은 세계의 모든 가톨릭 대학들의 정체성을 천명하면서, 가톨릭 대학이 지닌 고유한 본질과 특성 그리고 사명에 관하여 신학적인 원칙을 법조문 형태로 제시하였다. 가톨릭 대학은 본질적으로 진리추구, 진리전달, 진리적용의 ‘일반적’ 성격 외에, 교회의 사명인 신앙적 조명과 교회 가르침에 따라 교육ㆍ연구ㆍ봉사의 기능을 수행할 ‘교회적’ 성격을 동시에 지니고 있다. 이러한 본질적 성격은 다른 대학과 차별화된 가톨릭 대학의 고유한 특성을 나타낸다. 그 특성을 네 가지로 정리할 수 있는데, (1) 가톨릭 대학은 그리스도교적 영감으로 충만해야 하고, (2) 교육, 연구, 봉사가 신앙의 조명 안에서 이루어지며, (3) 교회의 전통적 가르침을 존중하고 따르고, (4) 인류의 초월적 유익을 위해 봉사해야 한다. 또한 가톨릭 대학은 자신의 고유한 본질과 특성에 의해 일반 대학과는 다른 측면의 봉사를 실천하는데, 교회와 사회에 대한 봉사, 사목적 봉사, 문화와의 대화, 복음 선교 등이 그것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to review the Catholic identity of the Catholic university. Today, Catholic universities should have their goals, not only to pursue their educational effectiveness, excellence in research, and efficiency of management like other colleges and universities do, but also to reserve and develop their ‘Catholic’ identity. In 1990, Pope John Paul II published his canonical Constitution, ｢Ex Corde Ecclesiae (‘from the heart of the Church’). In the constitution, the Pope clarified the identity of Catholic universities in the world, and it also explained the nature, characteristic, and mission of the Catholic university, in the form of the Cannon Law. A Catholic university by the nature has its two characteristics: (1) the ‘common’ characteristic which is search for truths, transition and application of truths that are the same goals as those of non-Catholic universities, (2) the ‘ecclesiastical’ one which implement university’s basic functions of education, research, and service according to light of faith and the Church’s teachings. These essential nature of the Catholic universities take into account their four characteristics which are different from other universities. (1) Christian inspiration in individuals and the university community, (2) Reflection and research on human knowledge in the light of the Catholic faith, (3) Fidelity to the Christian message in conformity with the magisterium of the Church, and (4) Institutional commitment to the service of others. Those nature and characteristics of a Catholic university should be linked to its four missions for the good of the Church and our societies. That is, commitment to the Church and society, pastoral service, dialogue with other cultures, and evangelization.
