아우구스티누스 행복론의 종교교육적 의의

국문 초록

진정한 행복은 무엇이며, 어떻게 추구해야 할 것인가가 아우구스티누스 행복론의 문제의식이다. 아우구스티누스는 먼저 물질적 세계관에 바탕한 에피쿠로스의 쾌락주의와 스토아학파의 행복론을 비판한 후 진정한 행복의 규정으로 영원불변성을 제시한다. 그의 시간론에서 영원불변한 것은 오직 하느님뿐임을 밝히고, 따라서 하느님만이 진정한 행복의 원천임을 보인다. 시간과 일체 만물은 하느님이 무(無)로부터 창조한 피조물이므로 가변적이고 무로 사라질 수 있다. 따라서 일체의 피조물은 행복을 얻기 위한 수단으로 사용(uti)될 수 있으나, 최종 목적으로 소유하려들면 안된다. 행복을 얻기 위해서 하느님을 궁극적 목적으로 삼고 하느님을 향할 것인지, 저급한 위계의 사물을 향할 것인지는 각자의 의지에 달려있다. 인간의 자유의지와 사랑이란 동력은 그 대상을 하느님으로 하면 질서 있는 사랑인 카리타스(caritas)가 되어 궁극적 행복으로 이끌고, 저급한 사물을 사랑하는 쿠피디타스(cupiditas)에 빠지면 불행을 초래한다. 그러므로 인간의 행 불행의 책임은 각자의 자유의지의 올바른 사용에 달려있다. 아우구스티누스의 이러한 행복론은 물질적 풍요 속에서 정신적 황폐화를 겪고 있는 현대인에게 종교교육을 통하여 올바른 행복을 얻도록 하는데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The theme of Augustine’s Eudemonics was the nature of the true happiness and the way to reach the true happiness. He proposed eternity and immutability as the criteria of the true happiness after criticizing Epicurus’ hedonism and stoicism which were based upon materialism. He argued that God is the only origin of the true happiness because God and only God is the eternal and immutable being according to his theory of time. Time and all other beings are created from nothing by God, and therefore temporary and mutable. They should be utilized as means for reaching the true happiness, and should not be mistaken as the ultimate aim. To reach the true happiness one may use his or her own free will to determine his action toward God or things of low order. The caritas which is an orderlylove toward God will bring the true happiness to those who used free will and power of love. On the other hand those who directed their free will and cupiditas, the love toward thing of low order, will meet misery. Therefore, the ultimate responsibility of happiness or misery lies on the right application of each person’s free will. Augustine’s eudemonics is significant as a direction for religious education of the contemporary people whose spirit is overwhelmed by the materialistic abundance.
