국문 초록

본 논문은 한국불교의 위기, 또는 한국불교의 근간을 이루고 있는 간화선의 위기가 한국불교교육에 그 근본적인 문제가 있다고 보고 한국불교 교육이 나아가야 할 방향을 탐색해 보는데 그 목적이 있다. 즉 본 논문은 한국불교 교육이 변화와 개혁에 직면한 상황에서, 어떻게 수행자들을 교육 할 것인가? 또 어떤 인격과 능력을 갖춘 수행자를 길러낼 것인가? 와 같은 보다 근본적인 물음과 그 해답을 찾아보는 데 일차적 목적을 둘 것이다. 또한 본 논문은 출가 수행자 교육뿐만이 아니라 일반불자 교육에 이르기까지 불교교육 전반에 걸쳐서 어떤 인재를 어떻게, 왜 길러내야 할 것인지에 대한 물음에 답하고 그 대안을 모색하는데 목적을 둘 것이다. 그러한 목적을 위해서 본 논문은 ‘불교교육’이 구체적으로 어떤 인성, 어떤 능력을 가진 사람을 어떤 방식으로 왜 길러내야 하는가에 대한 해답을 얻는 방법으로 윌리암 브로드(William Braud)의 전인적, 자아초월적인 고등교육 체계를 소개하고자 한다. 윌리암이 자신의 논문에서 소개하고 있는 자아초월 교육프로그램은 미국 켈리포니아주 샌프란시스코에 소재하고 있는 ITP(Institute of Transpersonal Psychology)에서 인간의 종교적 영성적 측면을 객관적 합리적 과학적 방식으로 접근하는 자아초월 심리학의 석ㆍ박사 과정에서 도입하고 있는 교육방식이다. 본 논문은 불교가 지향하는 깨달음의 길과 자아초월이 강조하는 영성의 길이 어떻게 다른지 살펴보고 자아초월 교육프로그램의 특징, 자아초월 교육의 근본원리와 적용, 자아초월 교육효과의 평가 등을 통해서 대중화와 국제화를 꿈꾸는 한국불교가 나아가야 할 방향을 불교교육의 측면에서 짚어보았다.

영문 초록

This article explores the future direction of Korean Buddhist education, believing that there is a fundamental crisis in Korean Seon Buddhism, which is a kernel of the larger Korean Buddhist community. This article attempts to answer such questions as the possible changes that might benefit Korean Buddhism and education reform of Buddhist practitioners and followers. It tries to find an answer to the question regarding what kind of character and abilities the education system might foster in Korean monks and nuns. This article explores one possible answer to the question regarding the kind of nuns and monks to be fostered and the reasons why this is important. It is part of the effort to strengthen the weakest area in the current system of Korean Buddhism. In regard to the kind of character and abilities Buddhist education might best foster, along with an approach which might prove to be the most fruitful in this areas, this article will introduce the perspective developed by William Braud (2006), who adopts a transpersonal approach to the whole person. The transpersonal education program that William Braud introduces in his article is the educational system of Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) located in the state of California in the United States. The educational system of ITP looks at the religious and spiritual aspects of human nature through the study of the objective, rational, and scientific literature in these areas in masters and doctoral level courses. This article examines the commonalities found in the path to enlightenment elaborated by Korean Buddhism and the spirituality emphasized by transpersonal psychology. Through the examination of the characteristics, fundamental principles and their applications, and assessment of educational effects of transpersonal approach, this article explores an alternative direction for Korean Buddhism as it struggles to establish its popularization and internationalization.
