백남준의 사이버네틱스(Cybernetics) 예술에 담긴 인본주의에 대한 고찰 행위자-연결망 이론(Actor-Network Theory)의 ‘대칭성(symétrique)’을 중심으로

국문 초록

프랑스의 과학사회학자이자 과학철학자 브뤼노 라투르(Bruno Latour)는 인간과 기술로, 자연과 문화로, 주체와 객체로 이분 법적으로 분리하던 근대 이전의 회귀해야 인본주의를 회복할 수 있다고 주장한다. 그는 인간과 비인간을, 자연과 사회를 구분함으로써 기후변화, 환경오염, 정치와 경제의 양극화, 인간성의 소외 등 수많은 문제가 야기되었다고 보았다. 이에 비인 간의 행위성을 인정하고 인간-비인간의 연결망 으로 세상을 바라보아야 한다는 인식의 전환이 필요하며, 문제 해결의 방법론 으로서 행위자-연결망 이론(Actor-Network Theory, ANT) 을 제안하였다. ANT에서 인간과 비인간의 연결망 , 이 둘의 관계는 대칭성(symétrique) 을 지닌다. 인공지능의 시대를 살아가는 오늘날의 예술가들은 새로운 매체에 도전하고 끊임없이 실험하면서 인간과 기계의 관계에 대한 다양한 잠재 가능성을 보여준다. 본 연구에서는 오늘날의 인공지능 기반 예술의 모태이며 프로토타입이라 할 수 있는 백남준의 사이버네틱스 예술에 담긴 미학을 라투르의 ‘대칭성(symétrique)’의 관점에서 검토하고, 이를 통해 예술과 사회에 주는 시사점을 탐색하였다.

영문 초록

Bruno Latour, French sociologist and philosopher of science, claimed that humanism can only be restored by returning to the pre-modern period, that is, before the dichotomous separation into humans and technology, nature and culture, and subject and object. He believed that by separating humans from non-humans and nature from society, numerous problems such as climate change, environmental pollution, polarization of politics and economy, and alienation of humanity have been caused. Latour proposed the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) , which should recognize the agency of non-humans and view the world through the network between human and nonhumans. And in the network between humans and non-humans in ANT, the relationship between the two is characterized of symétrique . Even today s artists living in the age of artificial intelligence are challenging new media and constantly experimenting, showing various potentials for the relationship between humans and machines. In this study, the aesthetics of Nam June Paik s cybernetics arts, which can be said to be the birthplace and prototype of today s artificial intelligence-based arts, were reviewed from the perspective of Latour s core concept, symétrique of ANT, and through this, the implications were explored.
