문헌설화에 나타난 질병에 대한 시선과 대응의 양상

국문 초록

이 글은 질병을 소재로 삼는 문헌설화 몇 편을 대상으로 하여, 과거 문학에서 질병이 어떤 방식으로 이해되었으며, 그 대응의 양상은 어떠했는가를 검토한 것이다. 질병은 작품 안에서 형상화될 때 문학적 굴절을 보이게 된다. 이때 질병은 실체와는 다른 의미를 지니게 된다. 문학에 형상화된 질병은 그 문학작품을 형성하게 한 사회문화와 관련을 지닐 수밖에 없다. 결국 질병은 문화적 맥락 속에서 사유되고, 재의미화 되는 것이다. 이 글에서는 병의 원인을 바라보는 시각과 병의 치유를 어떤 방식으로 전개하는가 하는 부분에 집중해서 검토하였다. 병이 귀신과 같은 외부적 존재가 인간의 몸에 지핀 결과라는 인식이 매우 오래 지속되고 있음이 확인되었다. 삼국시대에서 근래에 이르기까지 긴 시간 동안 질병의 원인은 귀신으로 이해되었던 것이다. 그와는 달리 매우 객관적인 견지에서 질병의 원인을 고찰한 경우도 있었다. 유몽인이 전하는 몇 가지 이야기에서 음식과 질병의 관계를 조망하는데, 이는 병의 증상을 객관적으로 관찰함으로써 그 실체에 다가가고자 하는 의식이 반영된 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 한편 병의 원인인 귀신을 달래거나 강한 힘으로 제압해 쫓아 버림으로써 극복할 수 있었다는 이야기가 다수 존재하고 있었다. 이들 이야기에서 주목할 것은 병의 원인을 바라보는 시선이나 병을 치료하기 위한 행위가 때로는 윤리적이고 이념적인 문제로 치환되는 경우가 발생한다는 점이다. 실체를 알 수 없는 질병 앞에서 분노에 휩싸여 타자를 탓하고 혐오하기보다는 나를 돌아보고 준비하는 과정이 필요하다. 남을 탓하는 마음이 표출될 때 우리는 질병의 은유에 빠지게 될 것이다. 또한 병을 치료해야 할 대상으로 바라보고 이념이나 정쟁의 대상으로 삼지 않는 태도도 견지해야 할 것이다. 이러한 측면에서 질병에 대한 설화들이 주는 의미는 현재적이다.

영문 초록

This article is a review of several literary tales about diseases, and how diseases were understood in the literature of the past, and how they responded. Disease shows literary refraction when it is shaped in a work. At this time, disease has a different meaning than reality. The disease embodied in literature is bound to be associated with the social culture that led to the formation of the literary work. After all, disease is privatized and re-meaning in a cultural context. In this article, we focused on the view of the cause of the disease and how it is developed. It has been confirmed that the perception that disease is the result of external beings, such as ghosts, on the human body for a very long time. For a long time from the Three Kingdoms period to the recent one, the cause of disease was understood as a ghost. On the other hand, the cause of the disease was considered from a very objective point of view. In several stories told by the Yumongin, the relationship between food and disease can be understood to reflect the consciousness of reaching out to the substance by objectively observing the symptoms of the disease. There were many stories that they could overcome the disease by appeasing the ghost, the cause of the disease, or by suppressing it with strong force and kicking it away. What is noteworthy in these stories is that the gaze on the cause of the disease or the act of treating the disease sometimes degenerates into ethical and ideological problems. In the face of an unknown disease, one needs a process of looking back and preparing for rather than blaming and detesting others. We fall into the metaphor of disease when our accusatory minds are expressed. One should also look at disease as a treatment target and maintain an attitude that does not target ideology or political strife. In this respect, the meanings of stories of diseases are present.
