예술가 교사 엄정순의 시각장애 미술교육 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 화가이자, 시각장애 미술교육자, 시각장애 미술교육 단체인 <우리들의 눈>의 설립자이자 디렉터인 엄정순의 교육실행을 ‘예술가 교사’라는 측면에서 검토하여 그 교육적 성격을 고찰하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 엄정순의 시각장애 미술교육은 첫째, 시각장애인들이 지각방식의 차이로 ‘다르게 봄’을 경험한다는 것을 기본 전제로 하고 있다는 것과 둘째, 시각장애인 학습자를 교수학습 과정에서 지식구축의 동등한 파트너로 인식하는 구성주의적인 접근을 시도하고 있다는 점, 셋째, 시각장애인의 표현과정에서 창의적인 순간의 역동을 이해하고자 한다는 점 등을 특징으로 하고 있었다. 엄정순은 ‘시각적 이미지 작업’과 ‘오감의 이미지 작업’을 통하여 사회적, 관습적, 제도적, 신체적으로 제한 될 수밖에 없는 시각장애인의 일상적 삶의 경험이 회복될 수 있기를 기대하였다. 이는 교사 중심, 진도 중심, 지식중심의 시각장애 미술교육과는 다른, 학습자 중심, 역량 중심, 경험 중심의 시각장애 미술교육의 모습이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 <우리들의 눈>의 구성원과 이러한 교육철학을 공유하는 과정에서 요구되어졌던 ‘교사교육자’로서의 정체성을 인지하지 못하였고, 그 결과 예술가 교사의 시각장애에 대한 전문성과 교육 전문성을 계발할 수 있는 조직적인 지원 시스템을 <우리들의 눈>안에서 구축하지 못하였음을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the teaching philosophy and praxis of Jeong Soon Oum as a teaching artist who has taught the visually impaired for more than 20- year in a non-profit organization. She was formally an artist and university professor who worked with 2-D painting. In 1996, however, she suddenly quitted her job as a university professor and entered into working with the visually impaired in a school for the blind as an art teacher. Since then, she has built a non-profit art education organization, Another Way of Seeing, and has still taught the visually impaired with teaching artists in Another Way of Seeing. In this study, I would like to investigate how her teaching philosophy and praxis has impact on the teacher education system of Another Way of Seeing which train a pre-service teacher as a teacher. As a result, I have three findings regarding her teaching praxis as a teaching artist for the blind. First, Jeong Soon Oum noticed there was a big difference in perception between the visually impaired and the non-visually impaired and accepted and theorized the notion of “seeing” for the visually impaired. Second, she considered the visually impaired students as equal partners in decision-making process, not as human beings who needed help or support, representing the constructivism in education. Third, she opened up the new possibility of creativity for the visually impaired. What she believes she can do through her art education teaching for them is to let them move beyond the prohibited socially, culturally and physically, in order to restore the everyday life which is no doubt permitted for the non-blind people but confined for the blind. She pursues moving forward together with the blind, experimenting with art through body image and body memory. Finally, what was missing in her teaching practice is a identity as a teacher educator who builds an artist as teaching artist and currently urgently requires for Another Way of Seeing.
