듀이 실험학교의 도덕교육적 함의

국문 초록

애초에 듀이에게 ‘과학적 윤리학’이라는 표현은 그 자체로 모순을 갖는 표현이었다. 과학은 시간과 공간 속에서 발생하고 소멸하는 자연 현상을 탐구하는 활동으로서 자연적 사실을 기술하는 데에 목적이 있는 반면, 도덕은 인간의 가치와 목적을 탐색하는 활동으로서 윤리적 당위를 판단하는 데에 목적을 두기 때문에 과학적 설명과 목적론적 해석을 혼동한 과학적 윤리학을 받아들이기 어려웠다. 그러나 실험학교 실험을 전후하여 듀이는 과학과 도덕의 분리를 명백한 것으로 받아들이는 종전의 견해를 조금씩 수정해 나가기 시작하였다. 듀이의 입장 변화를 가장 여실히 보여주는 장면 중에 하나는 실험학교의 교육 목적과 내용과 방법이다. 듀이가 정립하고자 했던 실험학교의 교육 목적과 내용과 방법은 과학이 사회적 성격을 갖는다는 기본 가정 위에서 성립한다. 듀이가 보기에, 이때의 과학은 의도된 목적을 달성하기 위하여 마음이라는 수단을 사용하는 사회적 문제해결 활동과 다른 것이 아니며, 다시 이 활동은 가치와 목적의 문제를 다룬다는 점에서 도덕적 성격을 갖는다고 보았다. 듀이의 시도는 ‘사회’라는 거점을 매개로 사실과 목적의 세계 간의 분리―혹은 과학과 도덕 간의 분리―문제를 극복하려고 하였다는 점에서 기존의 해법과 차별성을 갖지만, 그 해법 자체로 과학과 도덕의 관련에 관한 새로운 문제를 던져주고 있다.

영문 초록

Dewey considered scientific ethics as a paradoxical expression. For him, science meant an exploration of natural phenomena created and destructed in time and space and the purpose of science lies in the description of natural facts. Ethics, however, deals with questions about morality and values and its purpose lies in the judgment of good and evil or right and wrong. Science deals with the problem of what is, whereas, ethics concerns itself with the problem of what ought to be. Until the publication of an article about Renan s view on science, Dewey believed the question of what ought to be could not be answered through the exploration of what is. During the experiment of the Laboratory School, Dewey gradually changed his view on the rigid separation between science and ethics. Dewey s design of the Laboratory School curriculum showed a dramatic change in his view on the relationship between science and ethics. Laboratory School s educational purpose, subject-matter, and educational methods revealed the social characteristics of science. For Dewey, science was a kind of social pursuits to find an efficient way to achieve social goals through the cultivation of mind. These social goals also provide a context for moral judgment. Social goals set criteria for judging what is right or wrong. In this way, social context bridges the gap between science and ethics. Dewey s attempts to bridge science and ethics within social context seemed to succeed in some way but actually it revealed several theoretical shortcomings.
