국문 초록

도덕교육의 목적은 인간을 인간답게 기르는 것, 인간을 이상적인 상태로 이끄는 것으로 설명될 수 있다. 존슨과 칸트는 상상을 통해 인간이 이상적인 상태로 나아갈 수 있다고 생각한다는 면에서 동일한 입장을 취하고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 존슨의 도덕적 상상력이 경험적 차원에 한정되어 아직 일어나지 않은 일을 그려보는 통념적 의미에 국한된다면, 칸트의 상상은 인간으로 하여금 자기 능력의 한계 이상을 꿈꾸도록 이끈다는 점에서 인간 존재의 의미를 형이상학적 차원으로 확장시킨다. 상상력이 경험의 한계 안으로 제한될 때, 인간의 가능성은 실제적 삶에 국한되고 그러한 이유로 경험할 수 없는 세계는 어떠한 의미도 가질 수 없게 된다. 이러한 사고방식에서 인간은 존재 그 자체의 의미보다는 존재의 기능적인 면이 부각될 가능성이 더 크다. 도덕교육은 인간을 인간답게 기르고자 하는 사람들의 염원이 구체화되고 실현되어가는 행위이다. 경험적 마음과 차원을 달리하는 형이상학적 마음이 상정되지 않는다면 도덕교육은 불가능하고, 도덕교육을 통해 상상 속에 존재하는 형이상학적 마음이 점차 드러나게 된다는 점에서 도덕교육과 상상은 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of moral education can be said to raise human beings humanly and to lead them to the ideal state. Johnson and Kant seem to pose identical stances in a way that both philosophers think that humans can go on to the ideal state through imagination. However, while Johnson s moral imagination is limited to the empirical dimension and refers to the conventional wisdom of visualizing what has not happened, Kant s imagination expands the meaning of human to the metaphysical dimension by allowing human to imagine beyond the limitation of their possibility. When a human s imagination is restricted to the limitation of empirical dimension, his possibility cannot go beyond his actual life, and the world which cannot be identified by his experience has no meaning. In this context, the meaning of human will more likely be focused on the functional aspects rather than human itself. This can be the same with the moral education. If metaphysical dimension, the level of which is different from empirical dimension, is not established, moral education is not possible. Moral education and imagination are closely related in a sense that metaphysical dimension existing in the imagination reveals itself through moral education.
